A devastating avalanche struck the rugged slopes of the Caucasus Mountains in southwestern Russia, near the border with Georgia, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 climbers, with six others remaining unaccounted for. The disaster unfolded on Sunday afternoon when a massive wall of snow and ice broke loose from Mount Mizhirgi, located within the picturesque yet treacherous Bezengi Gorge of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic. 

According to emergency services and international news reports, the catastrophic slide occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. local time, catching a registered group of 33 climbers completely off guard as they navigated the high-altitude route. Dramatic footage captured by witnesses and shared widely across social media platforms showed an immense mass of snow roaring down the mountain slope at high speed, generating a deafening sound as it buried everything in its path. 

Out of the 33 individuals swept up or impacted by the cascading snow, 10 managed to escape or descend the mountain safely on their own. However, search and rescue teams later confirmed that 11 climbers lost their lives, while another six sustained injuries. As of Monday, rescue operations entered their second day, with authorities deploying more than 50 emergency personnel alongside an Mi-8 helicopter to locate the six missing climbers presumed buried beneath the deep snow pack. Operations have proven exceptionally difficult due to the rugged, high-altitude terrain and the persistent threat of secondary avalanches. 

Mount Mizhirgi stands as one of the highest and most formidable peaks in the Russian North Caucasus, soaring over 5,000 meters high. Characterized by steep inclines, massive glaciers, and unpredictable weather, the Bezengi Gorge area is a renowned hub for elite mountaineers and adventure tourists from around the world. Tragically, the region's extreme environment also makes it a hotspot for deadly alpine hazards. Local authorities and rescue coordination centers continue to investigate the exact trigger of the disaster, with preliminary assessments pointing toward the potential collapse of a hanging glacier above the climbing route
