The United States is preparing to observe the monumental 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the worst tragedy in modern American history. Commemorative events will be held across the three main attack sites: Ground Zero in lower Manhattan, New York; the Pentagon near Washington, D.C.; and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. These locations mark the exact spots where hijacked commercial airliners crashed on that fateful morning in 2001, altering the course of global security and national history forever. 

In New York City, where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center once stood, the official remembrance ceremony at Ground Zero is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. The core of this solemn gathering involves the traditional reading of the names of 2,983 victims. This total encompasses 2,977 victims from the 2001 attacks, alongside 6 victims from the earlier 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Bereaved family members and loved ones will take turns reading each name aloud, a powerful tradition that has remained central to the annual commemorations. 

The sequence of the day will follow the harrowing timeline of the attacks, featuring six distinct moments of silence. These pauses will mark the exact times of major events: the crash of American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower at 8:46 a.m., the impact on the South Tower, the attack on the Pentagon, the collapse of the South Tower, the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, and the collapse of the North Tower. Notably, this year’s observance will introduce an additional moment of silence dedicated to honoring individuals who have died from illnesses and injuries sustained during the grueling rescue and recovery efforts in the years following the disaster. The reading of the names will conclude around 1:00 p.m., accompanied by the sounding of "Taps," the traditional bugle call of remembrance. 

Leadership participation will be split between key national sites. Vice President JD Vance will represent the federal administration at the Ground Zero ceremony in New York, where multiple figures, including former presidents, are expected to gather. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump will mark the 25th anniversary by attending a separate commemorative event at the Pentagon in Virginia, where he is slated to deliver remarks. White House officials noted that dividing leadership roles ensures that all primary crash sites receive presidential-level recognition on this historic milestone. 

Simultaneously, remembrance programs will unfold at the other primary locations. At the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, a ceremony will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., featuring the reading of the names of the brave passengers and crew members who fought back against their hijackers, accompanied by the tolling of a remembrance bell. An afternoon program running from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. will include speeches and musical tributes, closing with public floral tributes at the Wall of Names, ensuring that a quarter-century later, the nation continues to honor the lives lost and reflect on the enduring legacy of resilience.
