A 35-year-old man named Kitcho Makati has been sentenced to death by the Francistown High Court in Botswana for the murder and armed robbery of a South Korean national committed a decade ago. The ruling brings a long-awaited chapter to a tragic case that shook both local authorities and the international community. 

The incident dates back to late October 2016 in Palapye, a town located approximately 270 kilometers northeast of the capital city, Gaborone. The victims were South Korean workers who were staying in the area as part of an international project team assigned to refurbish a local power station. Makati and his accomplices broke into their guesthouse in the dead of night, executing a brutal assault that left one South Korean man dead and his colleague severely injured. 

According to court details, the primary victim, identified in reports as Ja Chul Koo, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the neck and died almost instantly. His colleague and roommate, Moonhan Jang, was shot in the thigh but managed to survive the attack after escaping and receiving urgent medical treatment. Following the shooting, the perpetrators ransacked the lodging, stealing valuable electronics including laptops, mobile phones, and cash, alongside committing unlawful weapon possessions. 

The pursuit of justice experienced massive delays due to a combination of legal hurdles and administrative setbacks. Although police apprehended Makati approximately a week after the crime—discovering a stolen luxury watch and the murder weapon in his possession—the judicial process stalled significantly. Key factors included administrative complications regarding witness appearance procedures and the fact that the surviving South Korean colleague returned home for medical care and chose not to return to Botswana out of safety concerns. 

Furthermore, the prosecution originally indicted two other individuals alongside Makati. However, after years of legal proceedings, the Francistown High Court acquitted the two co-accused due to insufficient concrete evidence linking them directly to the murder and robbery charges, though one faced lesser weapons convictions. 

Legal experts note that Makati is now among the individuals under capital punishment sentences in Botswana, where the death penalty remains a legally retained sentence under specific penal codes for aggravated murder. Judicial records indicate he also faced separate inquiries regarding another high-profile armed robbery and murder case involving a foreign national in Gaborone. Makati retains the legal right to challenge the verdict by filing an appeal with the Botswana Court of Appeal, leaving the final chapter of this prolonged legal battle open as judicial reviews continue.
