Joseon paintings meet music to unfold on a new stage

The Cheonan Cultural Foundation announced on the 14th that it will present the special planned performance ‘Four Colors of Joy in Joseon Painting’ at the Cheonan Arts Center on November 14.

This performance combines the artistic worlds of An Gyeon, Jeong Seon, Kim Hong-do, and Shin Yun-bok—representatives of Joseon painting—with music, video, and commentary, freshly interpreting the landscapes, nature, and lives of the people contained within Joseon art through music and stage arts.

The performance is structured so that the audience follows the commentary of a historian to explore the artistic worlds of the four painters one by one.

Audiences can experience the worlds of An Gyeon’s Mongyu Dowondo (Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land), Jeong Seon’s Geumgang Jeondo (General View of Mount Geumgang) and Inwang Jesekdo (Clearing after Rain in Inwangsan Mountain), Kim Hong-do’s genre paintings, and Shin Yun-bok’s works capturing romance and elegant pleasures, all brought to life through music and video.

The melodies of the piano, daegeum (large bamboo transverse flute), and haegeum (traditional two-stringed fiddle) are joined by pansori (traditional narrative singing) and vocal performance to express the landscapes and emotions of the paintings through music, creating a novel stage where familiar tunes and Joseon art harmonize.

Featuring a diverse lineup of music including Hymn of Hope, Fate, Hollo Arirang (Alone Arirang), Eosa Chuldo (The Royal Inspector Secretly Departs), As Time Goes By, and A Beautiful Country, the stage will bring together historian Kim Se-hwan, bass-baritone Gil Byeong-min, mezzo-soprano Shin Hyun-sun, pansori singer Lee Bong-geun, daegeum player Kim Gyu-yong, haegeum player Jung Young-eun, and pianist Choi Young-min.

Ticket prices are 20,000 KRW for all seats. Detailed information and ticket reservations can be found on the Cheonan Arts Center website or by phone (1566-0155).
