Classic Ballet Embraces Theater and Media Art

Sleeping Beauty Reinterpreted Through the Eyes of Children

Daejeon, October 17 — The Daejeon Metropolitan Center for the Performing Arts announced that it will stage the special convergence ballet production Sleeping Beauty at the large hall on the 17th at 5:00 PM, offering a performance designed for children and the whole family to enjoy together.

This performance reinterprets one of Tchaikovsky's three great classical ballets—along with Swan Lake and The Nutcracker—through a child's perspective by incorporating commentary, theatrical elements, and media art.

Maintaining the dignity and emotional depth of the original ballet, the production features vivid narration by KBS voice actress Song Yeon-hee, famous for her role as Shin-chan’s mother in the popular animation Crayon Shin-chan, who entertainingly explains the storyline behind each ballet movement.

Furthermore, the main characters, including Princess Aurora and Prince Désirée, go beyond conventional gestures to showcase diverse facial expressions and humorous movements, expressing the flow of the ballet in a much more dramatic way. The cast also strengthens the three-dimensional elements of theater by encouraging audience participation and response. In addition, modern media art technology is utilized to implement major background scenes—such as a lavish palace lobby—onto the screen via 3D video, providing a rich sense of depth and visual spectacle.

The production company, Seoul City Ballet, is a private professional ballet troupe founded in 2009 with the goal of popularizing and expanding the base of classical ballet. It was selected as the most frequently featured contemporary dance organization in the Korea Culture and Arts Centers Association's "Culture Sharing Project" in 2019, 2021, and 2023.

Establishing its position as a pioneer in commentary-driven convergence ballet while preserving the elegance of traditional ballet, the troupe continues to present familiar fairy-tale and literature-based ballets such as The Nutcracker and The Little Mermaid, creating participatory ballets where the stage and the audience can communicate.

This performance was planned as part of a children's series aimed at enhancing children's happiness, developing their emotions, and cultivating future audiences. As a premium ballet production boasting outstanding stage direction, it is raising expectations to showcase the pinnacle of children's performances.

Nam Il-woo, Director of the Daejeon Metropolitan Center for the Performing Arts, stated, "Through this performance, the Center will serve as an opportunity to leap forward not merely as a venue presenting traditional Korean music, but as an art center where children and families can feel happiness and joy."

Meanwhile, the Daejeon Metropolitan Center for the Performing Arts has set "Next Wave" as the slogan for its 2026 season performances, successfully running shows across five distinct series: "Breath of Tradition," "Wave X," "Joy of Senses," "Children's Series," and "Signature Special."
