Suriname's Foreign Minister, Albert Ramdin, is set to take office as the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) in May. Expectations are high for his proposed solutions to key issues facing the Americas. In a recent interview with Telefuturo, Secretary General-elect Ramdin declared his commitment to actively resolving these issues by building trust among the nations of the Americas.

Resolving Regional Issues Through Trust Restoration

In the interview, Secretary General-elect Ramdin emphasized, "Creating an environment of trust among nations is essential to resolving the complex problems of the Americas." He added that it is crucial for the OAS to clearly demonstrate its role in defending democracy and human rights, and addressing security and immigration issues.

Efforts to Resolve the Venezuela Issue

Particularly regarding the Venezuela issue, Secretary General-elect Ramdin prioritized clarifying Venezuela's legal status within the OAS. Currently, Venezuela is an OAS member state, but its legal status remains uncertain since the OAS did not recognize President Nicolás Maduro's legitimacy in 2019.

Secretary General-elect Ramdin stressed that Venezuela should create a space for constructive communication with OAS member states to support the needs of its people and address the concerns of OAS member states. He also mentioned the OAS Permanent Council's resolution calling for the release of the results of the July 2024 Venezuelan presidential election, urging the Venezuelan government to cooperate.

Openness to Dialogue with Nicaragua

Secretary General-elect Ramdin also expressed openness to dialogue with Nicaragua, which is not currently an OAS member state. He stated that he is closely monitoring the situation in Nicaragua and will consult with OAS member states if there is a willingness to share information and engage in discussions.

Expectations for Improved Relations with the United States

Additionally, Secretary General-elect Ramdin revealed that he has a good relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump's side. He expressed optimism that a positive atmosphere has been created and that the U.S. position could change through dialogue.
