ASUNCIÓN - The Paraguayan Catholic Church has warned of a severe moral crisis in public office, strongly criticizing the unbalanced operation of justice. Cardinal Adalberto Martínez, Archbishop of Asunción, emphasized the responsibility of Catholic believers in public office and lamented that justice is undermining human dignity.

Additionally, Bishop Ricardo Valenzuela of Caacupé urged attention to the socially vulnerable, criticizing politicians, prosecutors, and businesspeople who abuse their power.

Cardinal Martínez stated during the second Sunday of Lent Mass at Asunción Cathedral, "Paraguay is experiencing a time of severe moral crisis, ethical crisis, and unbalanced justice." He particularly urged Catholic believers in public office to "act honestly and be witnesses of the Gospel in their workplaces."

The Cardinal emphasized the importance of human dignity, noting that the Paraguayan Constitution recognizes it as a fundamental principle. He asserted, "True democratic institutions must ensure the rule of law where all citizens are equal before the law," calling for an independent and fair judicial system. He also urged lawyers, prosecutors, and judges to "act bravely for the truth and realize justice with a fair balance."

Bishop Valenzuela also urged not to ignore the difficulties faced by the people, stressing the need to pay attention to those suffering from unemployment, poverty, and disease. Quoting Pope Francis, he urged attention to the socially weak and marginalized, criticizing those who abuse their power.

Bishop Valenzuela urged Catholic believers not to settle for a complacent and passive faith, emphasizing, "We are on the mountain, but we must descend to where help is needed. It is the life of a Christian to deliver God's word to those who suffer."

In anticipation of the Jubilee Year 2025, the Catholic Church called on political, economic, and social leaders to show a resolute commitment that prioritizes the welfare of the people and the protection of nature, rather than personal or specific group interests. The church emphasized the need to use power wisely and strive for the welfare of society.
