Bucheon, South Korea – April 30th marked a significant milestone for social entrepreneurship in Bucheon City as the final winners of the '2025 Bucheon Danbi Company Startup Support Project' were announced at a ceremony held at the Bucheon Social Economy Center. Now in its ninth year, the Danbi initiative has become a cornerstone of Bucheon's efforts to cultivate businesses that address pressing local social challenges through innovative social economy models. The term 'Danbi,' meaning welcome rain in Korean, aptly describes the project's aim to nurture enterprises that provide timely and essential solutions to the community's needs – a unique program tailored specifically to Bucheon.
This year's competition witnessed robust participation, with 44 teams submitting applications between February and March. Recognizing that impactful social enterprises require more than just good intentions, the Bucheon Social Economy Center provided intensive pre-incubation support. Applicant teams benefited from focused educational workshops and expert consultations designed to refine their business plans, ensuring both feasibility and market viability.
A local Bucheon resident and journalist who participated in the application process firsthand attested to the rigorous and supportive nature of the program. The initial three-day workshop offered a comprehensive overview of social economy principles and meticulously evaluated the alignment of submitted proposals with the project's core mission. The dedication of the instructors was palpable, creating a stimulating learning environment for aspiring social entrepreneurs.
Following the initial screening, 15 teams advanced to the next stage. Bucheon City further invested in their success by providing targeted training on effective presentation techniques, empowering the teams to articulate their visions compellingly during the final judging round. This comprehensive approach underscores Bucheon's commitment to not just selecting promising ideas, but also equipping entrepreneurs with the skills necessary to succeed.
The final evaluation, based on the teams' presentations, culminated in the selection of nine winning ventures, each poised to contribute meaningfully to the Bucheon community.
Taking the top honor was JS Global, whose innovative proposal centered on leveraging advanced NDIR CO2 sensor technology to create healthier and safer indoor environments. This solution directly addresses growing concerns about air quality and its impact on well-being.
The first prize was shared by two compelling initiatives. PS team presented a 'thin-film pressure sensor-based safety footrest for e-scooters,' tackling the critical issue of safe personal mobility, a growing concern in urban environments. The Little Tree Social Cooperative's proposal for 'woodworking education for the elderly to prevent dementia' highlighted the importance of addressing the social and cognitive well-being of Bucheon's aging population through engaging and therapeutic activities.
The excellence award recognized three diverse yet impactful ventures. Ever Noah's commitment to 'eco-friendly clothing production using discarded fabrics' champions sustainability and circular economy principles. BioHeals' 'AI-based medical big data treatment information chatbot' promises to enhance access to crucial healthcare information. Bebeto's 'toy recycling and educational content linked with seniors' fosters intergenerational connections while promoting environmental consciousness and resourcefulness.
The innovation award celebrated forward-thinking solutions across various sectors. The Public Design Research Institute team's 'smart bus shelter cooling and heating system using rainwater and geothermal energy' offers a sustainable approach to enhancing public transportation infrastructure and passenger comfort. Naitte team's 'AI analysis and NFC authentication-based recycling waste management solution' aims to improve the efficiency and accuracy of recycling efforts, a key aspect of urban sustainability. Freeworld's 'social economy-based web community platform for freelancers' addresses the evolving needs of the gig economy workforce by fostering connection and mutual support. Finally, SNOF's proposal to strengthen individual identity through 'fragrance-themed education and product consulting' offers a unique approach to personal development and well-being.
These selected teams are now set to receive comprehensive support tailored to the various stages of their startup journey. This includes in-depth business model refinement, personalized mentoring from experienced professionals, and crucial financial assistance in the form of seed funding to help bring their innovative ideas to fruition.
Jo Guk-je, Head of Bucheon City's Job Policy Division, emphasized the broader significance of the Danbi project, stating, "The Danbi Company Startup Support Project is an important platform that goes beyond simple startup support to nurture citizen entrepreneurs as key players in solving local problems. We hope that the selected teams will become new engines of innovation for the local community." His remarks underscore Bucheon's strategic vision of empowering its citizens to be active participants in addressing community needs through sustainable business models.
