Ulsan, South Korea – Residents of Ulsan and those eager to explore the captivating natural beauty of Ulleungdo Island will soon have a more convenient travel option, with the announcement of a new air route connecting Ulsan Airport (USN) and the forthcoming Ulleung Airport (UUS). The ambitious initiative, spearheaded by Ulsan Metropolitan City, is poised to significantly enhance accessibility to the remote island, fostering tourism and bolstering regional economic development. The anticipated commencement of this pivotal air service is slated for late 2027 or shortly thereafter, aligning with the projected operational launch of Ulleung Airport, currently under vigorous construction.
In a proactive move to revitalize Ulsan Airport and elevate air travel services for its citizenry, the city government formalized a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on April 18th. The signatories included Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom, Choi Yong-deok, Chief Executive Officer of the burgeoning regional airline Seom Air, and Kim Dong-woo, the Director of the Korea Airports Corporation's Ulsan branch. The agreement underscores a collaborative commitment to establishing and sustaining air connectivity between Ulsan and key destinations, with the Ulleungdo route taking center stage.
Seom Air, a nascent small-scale air transport operator established in November 2022, has a strategic vision to bridge the air travel gap between mainland South Korea and its more isolated island territories. The airline's business model is predicated on the operation of smaller aircraft suitable for the runways of Ulleung and Baengnyeong Airports, both of which are either under construction or recently completed. This focus on regional connectivity positions Seom Air as a crucial player in enhancing transportation infrastructure for island communities.
Under the terms of the MOU, Ulsan City has pledged to provide crucial administrative and financial support to facilitate Seom Air's operational establishment and ensure the long-term viability of the new routes. This commitment includes the implementation of strategic policies aimed at stimulating passenger demand for the Ulsan-Ulleungdo service, as well as other proposed routes.
The Korea Airports Corporation (KAC), the state-run entity responsible for the management and operation of airports across South Korea, will play a vital role by providing the necessary infrastructure and facilities at Ulsan Airport to accommodate Seom Air's operations. Furthermore, KAC has committed to undertaking necessary airport facility improvements to ensure seamless and efficient service delivery for the new airline and its passengers.
For its part, Seom Air has articulated a clear commitment to enhancing the air travel convenience for the residents of Ulsan. Beyond the highly anticipated Ulsan-Ulleungdo route, the airline has expressed its intention to launch additional domestic services connecting Ulsan with major hubs such as Gimpo International Airport (GMP) in Seoul and Jeju International Airport (CJU) on Jeju Island. These proposed routes signify a broader ambition to integrate Ulsan more effectively into the national air transportation network.
Ulleung Airport, the linchpin of this new connectivity initiative, is a significant infrastructure project aimed at transforming travel to the remote island. Historically, access to Ulleungdo has been primarily reliant on ferry services from the mainland, which can be subject to weather disruptions and involve lengthy travel times. The construction of the airport, located on a relatively flat area on the island, marks a pivotal moment in Ulleungdo's development, promising to boost tourism and provide more reliable transportation for residents. The airport is expected to feature a runway suitable for smaller aircraft, terminal facilities, and essential air traffic control systems.
Ulleungdo, often referred to as a hidden gem of South Korea, is renowned for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, pristine natural environment, and unique cultural heritage. The island attracts tourists seeking outdoor adventures, including hiking, fishing, and exploring its rugged coastline. The improved accessibility afforded by the new air route is expected to unlock the island's tourism potential, attracting a greater influx of domestic and potentially international visitors. This increased tourism activity is anticipated to have a positive ripple effect on the local economy, supporting businesses and creating employment opportunities.
Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom emphasized the profound significance of this collaborative endeavor, stating, "This agreement carries substantial meaning as it will significantly enhance the convenience for our citizens visiting the unique island region of Ulleungdo and will also attract a greater number of tourists to Ulsan, thereby playing a crucial role in the revitalization of Ulsan Airport." His remarks underscore the dual benefits of the new air link: improved accessibility for island-bound travelers and the strategic development of Ulsan Airport as a regional transportation hub.
The establishment of the Ulsan-Ulleungdo air route represents a significant step forward in enhancing regional connectivity and promoting balanced development across South Korea. By bridging the geographical gap between the industrial heartland of Ulsan and the remote natural beauty of Ulleungdo, this initiative promises to bring economic, social, and cultural benefits to both regions. As the anticipated opening of Ulleung Airport draws closer, the prospect of a swift and convenient air link to this captivating island becomes an increasingly tangible reality.
