Diverse programs to be showcased at Sejong City Hall and Sejong Culture & Arts Center from December 1-5.

 

The 2025 Sejong Arts Festival, themed "Sejong, Into the World of Hangeul," is set to run from December 1st to 5th at Sejong City Hall and the Sejong Culture & Arts Center. This year’s festival, hosted by Sejong City and organized by the Federation of Artistic and Cultural Organizations of Korea, Sejong City Association (President Lee Gwang-soo), promises a rich display of artistic interpretations of Sejong City's daily life, landscapes, and urban narratives.

Integrated Exhibition: Art Meets the City 

Kicking off the festival is a joint exhibition featuring the Art, Photography, and Literary Associations, which will be held from December 1st to 5th in the lobby of Sejong City Hall.

This exhibition will feature works by 60 participating artists, each capturing the "light and grain" of Sejong's diverse landscapes and essence through their unique perspectives. The convergence of these three artistic fields—visual art, photography, and literature—aims to provide a multi-layered appreciation of the city's aesthetic and cultural identity. The Sejong City Hall venue ensures high public visibility, allowing residents and visitors alike to engage directly with the creative output of local artists.

Main Performance: A Modern Interpretation of Hangeul 

The main performance is scheduled for 6:30 PM on December 4th at the Sejong Culture & Arts Center. This grand event will bring together the Korean Traditional Music (Gugak), Dance, Entertainment Artists, and Music Associations.

A major highlight of this performance will be works that interpret the spirit of Hangeul (the Korean alphabet created by King Sejong the Great) with a modern sensibility. This includes contemporary choreography and musical compositions inspired by Hangeul’s scientific structure and philosophical foundations. Furthermore, the performance is designed to broadly showcase the inherent cultural beauty of Sejong, offering citizens a spectacular evening of combined traditional and contemporary arts. The collaboration between four distinct artistic groups emphasizes the comprehensive nature of the Sejong arts community.

The Cultural Significance of the Festival 

The Sejong Arts Festival is held annually to celebrate and promote the local arts scene within South Korea's administrative capital. Sejong City, being named after the revered King Sejong the Great, places a strong emphasis on preserving and reinterpreting the cultural legacy of Hangeul and Korean traditional culture. The festival is a crucial platform for achieving this mission.

Kim Ryeo-soo, Director General of the Culture and Sports Bureau, expressed his hopes for the event, stating, "We hope this festival will become a new creative driving force for artists and a warm artistic experience for citizens, allowing them to encounter culture in their daily lives."

Lee Gwang-soo, President of the Federation of Artistic and Cultural Organizations of Korea, Sejong City Association, also conveyed his anticipation: "We hope this occasion serves as a platform to share the works of light and language that have blossomed from the fingertips of Sejong artists, and we look forward to the participation of many citizens."

Expanding the Cultural Horizon 

While the core events are centered around Sejong City Hall and the Culture & Arts Center, the festival often incorporates smaller, decentralized events such as craft workshops, poetry readings, and street performances in nearby public spaces like Sejong Lake Park and the National Museum of Korea, Sejong, although specific details for this year’s ancillary programs are yet to be fully publicized. These additional venues further integrate art into the city's urban fabric. The festival reinforces Sejong's identity as a city of art, culture, and science, committed to fostering a vibrant and intellectually stimulating environment for its residents. The combination of visual and performing arts, all unified by the theme of Hangeul, provides a powerful cultural narrative that resonates both locally and nationally.
