ASUNCIÓN — The low-cost airline JetSMART has announced the launch of a new direct route connecting Asunción, the capital of Paraguay, with Rio de Janeiro, a major city in Brazil. Flights will begin on January 9, 2026. This new route marks JetSMART's second international service from Asunción, solidifying its role in expanding low-cost air travel between Paraguay and key South American cities.

The new JetSMART route is expected to significantly improve accessibility to Rio de Janeiro, one of the most popular destinations for Paraguayan travelers. As the only year-round flight service on this route, it will provide stable travel options during both peak and off-peak seasons, contributing to increased tourism and commercial exchange between the two countries. The airline projects it will transport over 46,000 passengers in its first year.

Flights will operate three times a week, on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays, with a flight time of approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes. The direct service will depart from Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) in Asunción and arrive at Galeão International Airport (GIG) in Rio de Janeiro. JetSMART plans to use its fleet of Airbus aircraft, one of the youngest in South America, to ensure a safe and comfortable flying experience.

To celebrate the launch of the new route, JetSMART is offering a special promotional fare. One-way tickets are available from $49 (plus an additional $42 in taxes and fees, for a total of $91). This special fare is valid until Monday, August 25.

According to data from the Paraguayan National Civil Aviation Administration (DINAC), air passenger traffic between Paraguay and Brazil accounted for more than 20% of total air traffic during the first half of 2024 and 2025. This highlights the strong human exchange and the need for robust air connectivity between the two nations. JetSMART’s new route meets this market demand by offering an affordable travel option that traditional airlines have not provided, making it easier for more people to travel between the two countries.

JetSMART continues to expand its investment in the Paraguayan market. Following its first international route from Asunción to Buenos Aires, the launch of the Rio de Janeiro service is part of JetSMART’s strategy to strengthen its network in the South American region and establish Paraguay as an important hub. JetSMART’s commitment to providing efficient and affordable air travel is expected to bring significant changes to the Paraguayan aviation market in the future.
