Bugaegogagyo Bridge in Bupyeong-dong, Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, a key arterial road network, will undergo major road surface maintenance for the first time in 43 years since its construction. This repair work is expected to significantly contribute to securing the safety of the aging bridge and providing citizens with a more pleasant and safer traffic environment.

The Incheon Metropolitan City Construction Headquarters announced on May 6th that it will carry out a full-scale improvement project on the deteriorated pavement of Bugaegogagyo Bridge for six days, from May 12th to 17th. Bugaegogagyo Bridge is one of the major transportation networks in the Bupyeong area and has long provided convenience for local residents. However, concerns about the aging of the facility have been consistently raised over time.

In particular, a detailed safety inspection conducted last year revealed severe cracks and abrasion throughout the road surface of Bugaegogagyo Bridge, indicating the urgent need for repair. This road surface condition has been assessed as potentially impairing the safety of vehicle traffic and increasing the risk of traffic accidents, thus requiring immediate improvement.

Considering the structural characteristics of Bugaegogagyo Bridge, the repair work will be intensively carried out during nighttime hours. Due to the complex structure with the Gyeongin Line railway passing underneath, daytime work could disrupt train operations. Accordingly, work will proceed for six hours daily, from 11 PM to 5 AM the following day. This is an unavoidable measure to efficiently carry out the construction while minimizing inconvenience to citizens' daytime traffic.

During the construction period, only one lane in each direction of the two-lane Bugaegogagyo Bridge will be partially open to traffic, which is expected to cause traffic congestion in the affected section. In response, the Incheon Metropolitan City Construction Headquarters is preparing various measures to minimize inconvenience to citizens due to traffic congestion. Traffic controllers will be concentrated at major access points and bridge entrances/exits to smoothly manage traffic flow. Additionally, detailed information on the construction zone and detours will be provided through guide signs and banners to reduce confusion for drivers.

Furthermore, proactive public relations activities have been carried out to sufficiently inform citizens about the construction and seek their cooperation. Since April 28th, information leaflets outlining the construction overview, schedule, and traffic control measures have been distributed to public offices, including the Bupyeong-gu Office, and nearby large apartment complexes. Banners announcing the construction period and detour routes have been installed along major roads. Moreover, the construction schedule is being consistently communicated through local radio broadcasts and other various channels to engage with citizens.

An official from the Incheon Metropolitan City Construction Headquarters stated, "We have inevitably undertaken the repair work on Bugaegogagyo Bridge, which has played a significant role in the Bupyeong area for over 40 years, to ensure its safety and improve the traffic environment. We ask for the generous understanding and cooperation of citizens as traffic congestion is expected during the construction period." They added, "We also request that you actively cooperate with the guidance of traffic controllers stationed at the site and use detour routes whenever possible."

This Bugaegogagyo Bridge road surface maintenance project holds significant importance in improving aging infrastructure, prioritizing the safety of citizens, and creating a more convenient and pleasant traffic environment. The Incheon Metropolitan City expects that this project will extend the lifespan of Bugaegogagyo Bridge and contribute to building a long-term safe and efficient transportation system. While some inconvenience may occur during the construction period, it is anticipated that through this maintenance, Bugaegogagyo Bridge will continue to play a crucial role in ensuring the safe travel of Bupyeong area residents for many years to come.
