Jakarta, Indonesia – Mastercard Strive, a program under Mastercard's Center for Inclusive Growth, is making significant strides in supporting Indonesia's micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). With over 60 million SMEs contributing nearly 60% to the national GDP, these businesses are the backbone of the Indonesian economy. However, they face numerous challenges, including limited access to credit, low digital literacy, and a lack of basic business management training.
Recognizing the critical role of SMEs, Mastercard Strive is addressing these challenges through a comprehensive approach. The program offers solutions encompassing credit access, financial literacy, and cybersecurity to ensure the sustainability of small businesses in the digital age. Additionally, Strive is helping SMEs integrate into the digital economy by promoting digital payments and facilitating access to broader markets.
A key component of Mastercard Strive is the Strive Learning Network, a platform connecting government, private sector, and civil society organizations to share insights and best practices. This collaboration enables the creation of more effective and relevant policies to support SMEs. Mahatmi Prawitasari Saronto, Director of Cooperative Development and SMEs at Bappenas, emphasized the platform's value in bringing together diverse stakeholders to develop more responsive and practical policies.
Discussions within the Strive Learning Network have highlighted the need for integrated data across institutions to enhance coordination and the effectiveness of SME support efforts. By aligning data collection systems and standardizing growth indicators, assistance can be more targeted and impactful, enabling SMEs to scale up and better integrate into the digital ecosystem.
The network also promotes the adoption of environmentally friendly practices among SMEs. Participants have recommended that the government provide incentives for green SMEs to transition to sustainable business operations.
Mastercard Strive is not merely providing training and credit access but is also driving systemic changes to strengthen the SME ecosystem. Through its holistic approach, the program is helping to build a more inclusive, resilient, and impactful national economy.
