HANOI/SINGAPORE - In a move that underscores the strengthened ties between Singapore and Vietnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong embarked on a significant visit to Vietnam from March 25-26, shortly after both nations elevated their relationship to a 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' on March 12.
Experts from Singapore view this visit as a clear indication of the high hopes placed on this enhanced partnership. Vu Minh Khuong, Associate Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, highlighted Vietnam's remarkable progress, citing its ability to transform challenges into opportunities through improved institutional frameworks, technological adoption, and impressive economic growth.
The timing of Prime Minister Wong's visit, according to Khuong, reflects Singapore's confidence in the partnership's potential. Notably, with Singapore's general elections on the horizon, this visit signals Vietnam's strategic importance to Singapore's long-term plans.
Bilveer Singh, Associate Professor of Political Science, emphasized the visit's role in fostering mutual understanding and reinforcing the positive tradition of bilateral cooperation. He stressed the importance of continued high-level engagement to ensure a practical and effective partnership.
Both experts underscored the significance of this relationship within the broader ASEAN context, advocating for collaborative efforts to address global uncertainties and enhance regional resilience. Key areas for cooperation include labor productivity, digital and green economy initiatives, and maritime collaboration.
