HONGCHEON-GUN, GANGWON SPECIAL AUTONOMOUS PROVINCE – The Hongcheon-gun Family Center, operated by the Neobeunae Happiness Sharing Foundation, convened its selection committee on June 17 for the 6th Multicultural Awareness Contest (Art Competition). The event, held in the grand auditorium of the Hongcheon-gun Family Center, aimed to foster greater understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures among the youth.

The annual contest, now in its sixth iteration, invited young children and elementary school students from across Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province to express their interpretations of "Multiculturalism as I Draw It" (Diverse Cultures). Participants first attended a performance before submitting their artworks, showcasing their unique perspectives on multicultural themes. This year's competition saw an unprecedented level of participation, with a total of 379 artworks submitted.

A total of 150 participants were honored, including one Grand Prize winner, two Top Excellence Award recipients, three Excellence Award recipients, three Encouragement Award recipients, six Special Award recipients, and 135 Participation Award recipients. The judging panel, composed of art education experts, conducted a fair and rigorous evaluation based on various criteria, including thematic relevance, originality, artistic merit, and completeness.

This year's contest was designed as an integrated educational program, linking the art creation activity with a cultural performance titled "Peter and the Wolf," which highlights family understanding. To ensure equitable access and opportunity, particularly for children in remote areas such as Naemyeon and Seomyeon, " 찾아가는 공연" (visiting performances) were separately organized, bringing the experience directly to them.

Lee Sang-hoon, Director of the Hongcheon-gun Family Center, emphasized the significance of the event: "Through this contest, children naturally expressed the values of respect and understanding for different cultures through their art. We will continue to develop programs that enable local children and adolescents to cultivate attitudes of inclusivity and empathy." The Hongcheon-gun Family Center, entrusted by the Neobeunae Happiness Sharing Foundation, is a dedicated institution that provides comprehensive and universal services to various family structures, striving for a society that embraces diversity and offers equal support. The foundation itself is committed to aiding multicultural families and vulnerable populations, fostering a culture of happiness, sharing, coexistence, and communication, evident in its diverse initiatives like cultural workshops and K-Pop dance classes.

The burgeoning multicultural landscape in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, where the number of multicultural students increased by 23% in five years to over 5,000 in 2024, underscores the importance of such initiatives. Nationally, South Korea has seen a significant rise in foreign residents and international marriages, leading to the enactment of the Multicultural Families Support Act in 2008 and the establishment of numerous support centers nationwide. The Act on the Protection and Promotion of Cultural Diversity, introduced in 2014, further solidified efforts, designating May 21 as Cultural Diversity Day. This contest serves as a vital component in these broader efforts to promote mutual understanding and social integration.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in July. The winning artworks will be showcased in local exhibitions and utilized as educational content for further multicultural awareness campaigns.
