A shocking incident has occurred at the Palace of Justice, located in Asunción, the capital of Paraguay. A female employee of the court has come forward with allegations of sexual harassment and coercive behavior by a male colleague, causing widespread controversy.
According to a report by local media outlet Nación Media, the victim is a female stenographer working on the 5th floor of the South Tower of the Supreme Court. She reported to the police on April 16, 2025, that she had been sexually harassed by a male colleague in his 50s, who works in the same office.
According to the victim's statement, the accused male colleague allegedly locked the office door, turned off the lights, and attempted inappropriate physical contact. The victim, who experienced extreme fear and humiliation due to the sudden situation, immediately reported the incident to the police and urged an investigation.
The Paraguayan National Police, upon receiving the report, immediately launched an investigation and forwarded the case to Prosecutor Marcelo Saldívar of the Third Jurisdiction Prosecutor's Office in the Sajonia district, the area of jurisdiction. Recognizing the seriousness of the case, Prosecutor Saldívar ordered an immediate investigation and plans to summon the victim soon to hear a detailed account of the damages. Based on the testimony obtained, legal action will be taken against the perpetrator.
This incident, occurring within Paraguay's judiciary, has sent significant shockwaves through society. Many are expressing concern and anger, especially given that this disgraceful event took place within the very institution that should uphold justice. There is a strong demand for a thorough investigation into the issue of sexual violence within the court and for the establishment of measures to prevent recurrence. Protection and support for the victim have also emerged as urgent priorities.
Paraguayan women's organizations and civil society have expressed deep concern about this incident and have issued statements urging a thorough and fair investigation. They emphasize that workplace sexual violence is a serious criminal act that inflicts severe mental distress and long-term consequences on victims and is unacceptable under any circumstances. They also urged Paraguayan judicial authorities to conduct a swift and transparent investigation, severely punish the perpetrator, and provide full support to the victim so that she can safely pursue legal proceedings.
This incident is raising awareness about the issue of workplace sexual violence not only within the Paraguayan judiciary but also in society as a whole. Support and solidarity for the victim, who bravely spoke out about her experience, are growing, and social discussions aimed at resolving the fundamental issues, along with the severe punishment of the perpetrator, are expected to become more active. The Paraguayan judiciary must take this incident as an opportunity to improve its internal issues and make active efforts to ensure that all members can work in a safe and respectful environment.
