Buenos Aires, Argentina – A recent report by consulting firm Focus Market has revealed that Argentina's clothing prices are dramatically higher than those in neighboring Latin American countries, creating a significant burden for consumers and challenging the domestic textile industry.

The report, which compared prices of various items including jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, perfumes, and bags, found that clothing in Argentina is, on average, 118% more expensive than in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Paraguay. Notably, a complete clothing purchase in Brazil costs 78% less than in Argentina, with the total price being $591 compared to $1,054.

Similar price differences were observed in Paraguay ($595) and Chile ($475), with the latter offering prices less than half of those in Argentina. Even Uruguay, which is recovering from a 2023 economic crisis, offers clothing prices 30% lower than Argentina, with individual item prices ranging from 68% to 79% cheaper.

This substantial price disparity has led many Argentinian consumers to shop for clothing in neighboring countries, posing a significant challenge to the domestic textile industry. Damian Di Pace, director of Focus Market, explained that these price differences are strongly encouraging consumers to make overseas purchases.

In response, the Argentinian government has taken steps to alleviate the burden on consumers and support the domestic industry. Import taxes on clothing and shoes have been reduced from 25% to 20%, and fabric import taxes have been lowered from 26% to 18%. Furthermore, President Javier Milei's administration is pursuing comprehensive tax reforms, including federal tax reductions and the elimination of local taxes.

Economy Minister Luis Caputo recently acknowledged that Argentina has "the most expensive clothing in the region and the world," signaling the government's commitment to addressing this issue.
