A Korean American student attending a private Catholic high school in North Carolina has come forward with allegations of severe racial bullying and harassment at the hands of his white teammates. The victim's parents have filed a lawsuit against the school, alleging that the institution failed to adequately address the issue and protect their son.
According to the victim's father, Mr. A (pseudonym), the bullying began in 2022 when his son joined the school's hockey team. The victim was subjected to constant verbal abuse, physical intimidation, and social isolation by a group of white students. The harassment escalated when the perpetrators secretly recorded the victim in the shower and shared the explicit video on social media, accompanied by racist slurs and threats.
Despite repeated attempts to address the issue with the school administration, Mr. A claims that the school was slow to respond and ultimately took only minimal disciplinary action against one of the four perpetrators. The victim was forced to continue attending school with his tormentors, and was eventually kicked off the hockey team entirely.
"Our family's life has been on hold since September 2023," Mr. A said. "It's heartbreaking to see our son suffer so much while his attackers face no significant consequences."
The ordeal has taken a severe toll on the victim's mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms. Mr. A and his wife have since formed an Asian parents' association to advocate for the rights of other Asian students and prevent similar incidents from happening.
"As a minority in the United States, I felt powerless to speak up," Mr. A said. "I hope that by sharing our story, we can bring about change and create a safer environment for all students."
The family's attorney has filed a lawsuit against the school, alleging negligence and a failure to provide a safe learning environment. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages and calls for the school to implement stricter anti-bullying policies.
This incident has sparked outrage and calls for action within the local community and among Asian American advocacy groups. Many have pointed to the incident as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Asian Americans in the United States, and the need for schools and communities to do more to address racism and discrimination.
