ICHEON, Gyeonggi Province — In an era where technological advancement often feels impersonal, Icheon City is proving that silicon and software can have a heart. The Icheon City Public Health Center announced on Saturday that it is expanding its innovative welfare program, which provides Artificial Intelligence (AI) companion robots to elderly residents living alone.

A Digital Companion Named 'Dasomi'
The star of this initiative is "Dasomi," a state-of-the-art AI robot specifically designed for senior care. Currently, the city has deployed 25 units to elderly citizens aged 65 and older who are part of the local visiting healthcare project. Building on the program's success, the health center plans to distribute five additional units this year, targeting those most at risk of social isolation.

Dasomi is not just a stationary machine; it is a sophisticated caregiver powered by ChatGPT. This allows for natural, fluid voice conversations, moving beyond simple programmed commands. The robot serves as a "mal-beot" (a Korean term for a talking companion), helping to alleviate the chronic loneliness that often plagues seniors living without family support.

Bridging the Gap in Health and Safety
The robot's capabilities are divided into two primary pillars: proactive health management and emergency safety response.

Personalized Health Coaching: Dasomi reminds users to take their medication on time and ensures they are eating regular meals. It also provides cognitive strengthening programs and plays music to keep the mind active and entertained.
24/7 Emergency Surveillance: Equipped with radar-based motion sensors, the robot monitors the user’s environment in real-time. If an elder shouts, "Dasomi, help me!" or if the sensors detect a prolonged lack of movement indicating a potential fall or medical emergency, the system immediately alerts a 24-hour monitoring center. If the situation is deemed critical, the center coordinates directly with 119 emergency services.
Restoring Smiles and Emotional Stability
The human impact of the program is already evident. A local resident, identified as Mr. Park, shared his experience: "Having this robot around makes me feel less lonely. I find myself smiling more often. The conversation feature has been a huge help in lifting my mood and keeping the 'blues' away."

Experts suggest that such AI-driven interventions are crucial as South Korea rapidly transitions into a super-aged society. By providing emotional stability and a safety net, these robots act as a vital bridge between the government’s welfare services and the private lives of vulnerable citizens.

A Call for Community Participation
"We are committed to ensuring that no senior is left in a blind spot of care," a spokesperson for the Icheon City Public Health Center stated. "We urge the community to stay vigilant and recommend neighbors who may need these visiting healthcare services to our team."

As Icheon City continues to integrate AI into its social safety net, it sets a precedent for how smart cities can use technology to foster a more compassionate and secure environment for their oldest generation.
