Jeju Expands Drone Delivery Services to Remote Islands

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province has been selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport's '2025 Drone Demonstration City Development Project,' marking a significant expansion of drone delivery services to its remote islands. This selection follows Jeju's five consecutive years of recognition as a drone demonstration city since 2019, solidifying its leading position in drone utilization.
Key Highlights:
Expanded Delivery Services:Drone delivery of daily necessities and local specialties to islands such as Gapado, Marado, and Biyangdo.
Extended operating hours: Wednesday to Saturday, 4 PM to 10 PM (previously Wednesday to Friday, 4 PM to 8 PM).
Increased maximum delivery weight: 10kg for Biyangdo and Marado (previously 3kg).
Larger delivery boxes and expanded partnerships with the public delivery app 'Meokkkaebi' to increase available merchants and delivery items.
Drone Special Free Zone Operation:Operation of the nation's largest drone special free zone (1283㎢) from February 2021 to June 2025.
Development of drone demonstration and commercialization services.
Application for the 3rd Drone Special Free Zone is planned.
Establishment of a large-scale event safety monitoring and emergency response system using tethered drones and AI.
Expected Benefits:Improved living convenience for residents of remote islands.
Discovery and commercialization of innovative drone services tailored to the region.
"We will continuously improve and expand drone-based logistics services to the remote islands to enhance the daily lives of residents," said Yang Je-yoon, Director of the Innovation Industry Bureau. "We will continue to strive to discover and commercialize innovative drone services that are tailored to the region."
This initiative underscores Jeju's commitment to leveraging advanced technology to address the unique challenges of its island communities, setting a precedent for drone-based logistics in remote areas.
