Suva, Fiji – Fiji is charting a course to reclaim its maritime heritage and establish itself as the Pacific's premier shipbuilding and repair hub, bolstered by significant support from the Australian government. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently received the initial findings of a crucial feasibility study conducted by Arup Australia, outlining the potential for a world-class shipbuilding facility.

This initiative is a cornerstone of a comprehensive $200 million AUD investment package from Australia, aimed at revitalizing Fiji's ports and maritime infrastructure. The feasibility study delves into the viability and design of a state-of-the-art facility, poised to transform Fiji's maritime capabilities.

Prime Minister Rabuka expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its potential to not only stimulate economic growth but also rectify historical perceptions. "I'm very excited because we were blamed for killing the old enterprise...we're very pleased to have it going again," he stated, referring to the decline of Fiji's shipbuilding industry during his previous tenure in the 1990s. Australia's outgoing High Commissioner to Fiji, Ewen McDonald, highlighted Fiji's strategic geographic location as a key advantage. "I'm really looking forward to watching this develop...it's about Fiji' priorities, it's about the region's priorities in terms of shipping," McDonald said.
