Samcheok Accelerates National Geopark Certification, Highlighting Geological Heritage

SAMCHEOK, South Korea – Samcheok City is intensifying its efforts to achieve National Geopark certification, drawing renewed attention to its exceptional geological resources and potential as a premier ecotourism destination. This push was recently underscored by a visit from officials of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, who explored key sites slated for inclusion in the geopark.

On June 12, as part of their "Eco-Environmental Resources Exploration" educational program, the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Human Resources Development Institute brought provincial officials to Hwanseongul Cave in Daei-ri, Singi-myeon, Samcheok. Participants received in-depth explanations on the geological significance of the Daei-ri Cave Zone, ongoing conservation efforts, and Samcheok City's strategic plans for securing National Geopark status.

Samcheok boasts a remarkable array of geologically significant sites, spanning both inland and coastal areas. Beyond the renowned Hwanseongul Cave and the broader Daei-ri Cave Zone, these include the majestic Miin Falls, the therapeutic Gagok Sulfur Hot Springs, and the striking Chogok Coastal Erosion Landforms. The city is systematically compiling academic research and interpretive materials for each of these key geodiversity hotspots. This rigorous preparation aims to demonstrate the scientific, educational, and aesthetic value of these sites, which are crucial criteria for geopark designation.

To bolster its application, Samcheok City is actively pursuing partnerships with relevant research institutions, forging collaborations that will contribute to further scientific understanding and conservation strategies. Concurrently, the city is developing win-win programs with local residents, recognizing that community engagement and benefit-sharing are vital for the long-term sustainability of a geopark. These initiatives aim to ensure that the geopark not only protects geological heritage but also contributes to the economic well-being of the local population through sustainable tourism and educational opportunities.

A city official emphasized the profound geological preservation value of the region, stating, "Samcheok is an area of immense geological importance. Through National Geopark certification, we aim to systematically protect these invaluable resources and establish a foundation for sustainable ecotourism." The official further articulated the city's vision, adding, "We will continue to actively discover and disseminate educational and tourism models that leverage our local geological heritage."

The concept of a National Geopark, as defined by the Korea National Geoparks Network, involves areas with outstanding geological heritage, where sustainable development is pursued through protection, education, and tourism. Certification would bring Samcheok increased national recognition, attract a wider range of domestic and international visitors, and potentially unlock further funding for conservation and infrastructure development.
