Recently, medical doctor, entrepreneur, and prominent television personality Yeo Esther (61) became the target of unfounded online rumors, with some netizens absurdly claiming that she was of Chinese descent (known as a "Hwagyo" rumor). In response to these groundless claims, her husband, medical journalist and broadcaster Hong Hye-geol (59), stepped forward to firmly refute the allegations by publicly disclosing his wife’s deep-rooted and patriotic family history. 

Through a statement shared on his social media channel, Hong addressed the malicious rumors directly, stating, "Following our recent TV appearances, there have been numerous malicious comments and speculations online suggesting that my wife, Yeo Esther, is of Chinese descent. I am writing this to completely clear up the misconception and set the record straight." To substantiate his defense, Hong revealed a proud lineage deeply intertwined with modern Korean history, education, and democratization.

According to Hong's disclosure, which is backed by historical records from the Independence Hall of Korea, Yeo's great-grandfather, Yeo Dong-yeon (1884–1951), was a prominent local leader in Seongju, North Gyeongsang Province, during the Japanese colonial period. He actively supported national education initiatives, notably contributing significantly to the founding and operation of Jayang Academy, an institution dedicated to preserving Korean identity and educating youth under colonial rule. 

Furthermore, Yeo's grandfather, Yeo Sang-won (1904–1975), was an influential economic and press figure in the Daegu and North Gyeongsang regions across both the Japanese colonial era and modern South Korean history. He served as the president of the Daegu Chamber of Commerce for 15 years, founded the regional newspaper Daegu Ilbo, and actively engaged in pioneering the domestic textile industry alongside prominent figures such as Samsung founder Lee Byung-chul. 

The family's sacrifices for democracy continued with Yeo's father, Yeo Man-young (1939–1986). While working as the planning director for Daegu Ilbo in 1971, he distributed leaflets supporting opposition presidential candidate Kim Dae-jung during a major campaign rally in Daegu. This courageous act provoked the ire of then-President Park Chung-hee, resulting in the forced closure of the newspaper, imprisonment for Yeo Man-young, and the subsequent devastation of the family business, which even forced the family into a period of exile in Japan. 

This is not the first time Hong has defended his family against online misinformation. Ahead of guest appearances on major entertainment programs like MBC's Radio Star and KBS 2TV's Problem Son in House, Hong published another detailed post highlighting his family's civic contributions. He emphasized that his own father served as a Vietnam War veteran, and noted that his father-in-law sacrificed the family enterprise for the democratization movement. 

In addition to addressing the family lineage, Hong stressed that both he and Yeo Esther maintain strict financial and legal transparency, diligently paying their taxes with zero penalties despite multiple intensive audits by the National Tax Service. He also highlighted that Yeo’s health supplement enterprise, "Esther Formula," has accumulated approximately 8 billion won in lifetime charitable donations to date, and proudly noted that both of their sons have successfully completed their mandatory military service.

Yeo Esther graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine and worked as a preventive medicine specialist before founding Esther Formula in 2009, growing it into a successful enterprise. Her husband, Hong, also a graduate of Seoul National University’s medical school, built a respected career as a medical journalist. Through this comprehensive disclosure, the couple successfully put an end to the baseless rumors, highlighting a lineage rich in historical sacrifice and public contribution.
