Hadong-gun Remembers and Honors the Sacrifice of Young Student Soldiers

On the 25th, the '75th Commemoration Ceremony for Student Soldiers Killed in Action at the Hwagae Battle' was solemnly held at the archery field in Hwagae-myeon, Hadong-gun. The ceremony honored the noble sacrifice of young student soldiers who willingly gave their lives to defend their country during the Korean War.

The Battle of Hwagae, which took place on July 25, 1950, just one month after the outbreak of the Korean War, was both a tragic and heroic engagement. Approximately 180 young students, aged 15 to 18, from the Jeollanam-do region voluntarily enlisted. With little to no proper training, they bravely confronted the North Korean 6th Division, which was armed with tanks and anti-aircraft weapons. They fought fiercely for about 12 hours at Hwagae Market, a strategically important location, suffering immense casualties with over 70 dead or missing.

This battle is recorded as the first student soldier engagement in the Korean War, and the sacrifice of these young student soldiers played a decisive role in halting the North Korean forces' advance towards Busan. This crucial delay allowed the South Korean military to establish the Nakdong River defense line and provided invaluable time for refugees and police to retreat. The remains of 27 student soldiers who died in the Hwagae Battle are interred at the Hwagae Battle Student Soldier Memorial Park in Tap-ri, Hwagae-myeon, honoring their spirits.

Around 200 people, including bereaved families, local residents, and representatives from veterans' organizations, attended the commemoration ceremony to honor the fallen student soldiers. Attendees paid their respects through a moment of silence, flower offerings, and incense burning, reflecting on the noble spirit of sacrifice of those who gave their blossoming youth for the nation. A Hadong-gun official stated in a commemorative address, "To forget those who sacrificed for the nation is tantamount to the nation forgetting itself," adding, "We will do our utmost to uphold the honor of war veterans and their families and provide responsible treatment and care."

Hadong-gun plans to continue various commemorative and educational activities to preserve the spirit of national heroes and patriots, including those from the Hwagae Battle, and to ensure that future generations fully understand their significance. This will be an important step, moving beyond mere commemoration, to reflect on the lessons of history and foster a stronger sense of security awareness in future generations.
