SEOUL — South Korea and Indonesia have taken a major step toward strengthening bilateral economic ties, agreeing to expand cooperation in halal certification to facilitate South Korean corporate entry into the massive Southeast Asian market, South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced Friday.

The Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Indonesia’s Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH). The agreement was finalized on the sidelines of the Halal Summit 20, which opened the same day in the Indonesian city of Depok.

Navigating a Growing Market

Halal certification is an official verification process ensuring that products, ingredients, and manufacturing procedures comply strictly with Islamic law.

Indonesia represents one of the largest halal markets globally. The country has been progressively broadening the scope of items requiring mandatory halal certification—crucial sectors like food and cosmetics are slated to fall under these strict certification mandates starting next month.

Deepening Bilateral Ties

The newly minted agreement builds upon high-level diplomatic momentum between the two nations. It follows the elevation of bilateral relations to a "special comprehensive strategic partnership," established during President Lee Jae Myung’s official visit to Indonesia this past March, according to the South Korean drug ministry.

The partnership is expected to significantly ease regulatory hurdles for South Korean businesses seeking to expand their footprint in Indonesia’s rapidly evolving consumer market.
