The Serious Crime Investigation Agency (SCIA) has transferred its first-ever detained narcotics offender to the Prosecution Service. This marks the first instance of a detained suspect being handed over to the prosecution since the agency's establishment.
The Narcotics Investigation Bureau of the Seoul Central Serious Crime Investigation Agency announced on the 25th that it transferred A, a national of a Southeast Asian country, to the Incheon District Prosecution Service under custody on the 23rd on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act.
A is accused of attempting to smuggle 2.5 kg of cannabis into the country by concealing it in international mail. The Seoul Central Serious Crime Investigation Agency urgently arrested A through a "controlled delivery" method, which involves allowing customs-intercepted narcotics to be delivered normally in order to track the actual importer.
Deeming the scale of the cannabis smuggling to be large and recognizing the risk of evidence destruction and flight, the Seoul Central Serious Crime Investigation Agency applied for an arrest warrant for A to the Incheon District Prosecution Service on the 17th. The prosecution requested the warrant the following day, and the court issued the warrant on the same day citing concerns over evidence destruction and flight risk.
