Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, will hold a 'Gizzard Shad Consumption Promotion Event' from August 1st to 3rd at Jinsang Port in Jingyo-myeon. The event aims to promote the consumption of gizzard shad, a local specialty, and increase the income of fishermen.
Considering the summer heatwave and heavy rainfall, this year's event will focus on practical promotion rather than a large-scale festival. It is hosted and organized by the Jinsang Fishing Village Association of Jingyo-myeon. Visitors can purchase fresh gizzard shad at prices 3,000 to 5,000 won cheaper than market prices, and a free tasting event will also be available for direct experience of the gizzard shad's flavor.
The Jinsang Fishing Village Association catches about 2.1 tons of gizzard shad per week from the clean waters of Namhae Gangjin Bay, with fishing continuing until late October. Jinsang gizzard shad is particularly known for its chewy texture and rich oiliness, as it grows in the fast-flowing waters where the freshwater of Sacheon Bay meets the sea off Noryang. Furthermore, it is highly valued as a nutritious seafood, rich in unsaturated fatty acids like DHA and EPA, and effective for calcium intake. Recently, word-of-mouth has led to a significant increase in visitors purchasing Jinsang gizzard shad as sashimi and grilled dishes.
Hadong-gun plans to simultaneously promote the income growth of local fishermen and expand gizzard shad consumption through this event. Furthermore, the county intends to regularize small-scale seasonal specialty events in the future, developing them into a continuous festival model for both tourists and local residents to enjoy. As the scent of the sea, carried by the summer breeze, fills the harbor, this event is expected to have a positive impact on regional economic revitalization.
