SEOUL, South Korea – Renowned jazz guitarist and composer Kim Sung-soo, a professor of Church Music in Practical Music at Baekseok Arts University and the director of its lifelong education center, has released his sixth jazz album, "Travel Stories_ Lake Minnewanka." Following his duo album "[Into The Woods]" and trio album "[Simply Trusting Everyday]," which featured hymn reinterpretations and was released in September of last year, this new offering marks a welcome return to a quartet format for his dedicated fanbase.

"Travel Stories_ Lake Minnewanka" presents a collection of nine original compositions, each inspired by personal experiences and poignant moments in Kim's life. The album serves as the inaugural installment of a larger project titled "Travel Stories," with this release likened to its first heartfelt letter to listeners.

The titular track, "Lake Minnewanka," reflects the tranquility and beauty of a lake near Banff, Canada, where Kim traveled with his elderly parents. He describes the serene environment as silently embracing past sorrows. "Warm Window" captures the anticipation of spring while sitting by a large window on a cold winter's day. The emotionally charged "Broken Memories" was conceived during a period when a severe finger fracture overshadowed even the sensation of pain. "Jasper" paints a musical portrait of an unforgettable, peaceful countryside village nestled amidst breathtaking nature.

In a deeply moving piece, "Consolation" conveys the unexpressed solace and mourning Kim felt in the aftermath of the Itaewon tragedy, a disaster where he felt helpless to offer aid. "가을장마 (Echoes of Autumn Rain)" ("Gaeuljangma" translates to "Autumn Rain") evokes the monotonous echoes of a prolonged rainy season in 2021, mirroring the inescapable passage of time during his forties. "비록 지금은 (Though Now)" ("Birok Jigeumeun" translates to "Though Now") contemplates an undefined "someday" while wandering through a dimly lit forest tunnel. "2월말 (Late February)" ("Iwolmal" translates to "Late February") captures the ambivalent yet slightly hopeful feeling of early spring's tentative arrival. Finally, "Some Other Day" expresses the yearning for future travel, envisioning a solitary drive on an unfamiliar road with a cup of strong coffee and fresh air.

Infinit Music, the distributor of the album, highlighted the distinct musical approach in this new work. They noted that Kim's compositions explore different sonic territories compared to his previous releases, emphasizing a deeper improvisational language that showcases his growth as a jazz guitarist. A key highlight of "Travel Stories_ Lake Minnewanka" is the dynamic interplay within the quartet.
