The Daejeon City Dance Company is set to captivate audiences with its 77th regular performance, 'In-yeon (Ineffable Ties) - Family Photo II,' a poignant and evocative creative dance drama. This highly anticipated production will take place at the Grand Hall of the Daejeon Arts Center on Friday, April 25th, and Saturday, April 26th, promising two evenings of compelling storytelling through the art of movement.
'In-yeon - Family Photo II' is a reimagined and enhanced iteration of the company's acclaimed 2022 performance, 'In-yeon - Family Photo.' This year, the narrative delves deeper into the tumultuous socio-political landscape of 1960s Daejeon, specifically using the historical March 8th Democratic Uprising as its powerful backdrop. The performance masterfully blends historical realities with imaginative storytelling, offering a unique perspective on the lives and struggles of young individuals navigating a period of significant upheaval and change in South Korea.
The creative team behind this ambitious project boasts notable talent. Seo Ye-won, a distinguished adjunct professor at Daejeon University, has lent her expertise as the collaborative choreographer, working closely with the Daejeon City Dance Company to bring this intricate narrative to life through expressive choreography. Adding another layer of artistic depth, the performance seamlessly integrates the evocative photographic works of the late Shin Keon-i. Shin's photographs, renowned for capturing the raw emotions and atmosphere of the 1960s in Korea, will serve as a visual tapestry, enriching the audience's understanding of the era's sentiments and providing a powerful context for the dancers' movements.
At the heart of the drama lies the intertwined stories of 'Seon-hee,' a spirited high school girl, and 'Gwi-dong,' a passionate young photographer. Their burgeoning relationship unfolds against the backdrop of student activism and societal unrest. One of the most anticipated scenes depicts a cleverly disguised protest, where the energy and unity of the students are channeled through the guise of a lively folk dance, highlighting the innovative ways in which resistance movements took shape during this period.
Adding a vibrant and authentic touch to the portrayal of youth culture in the 1960s, the performance will feature a dynamic recreation of swing dance, a popular social dance form among young Koreans at the time. This energetic interlude promises to inject a sense of liveliness and offer the audience a glimpse into the youthful exuberance that persisted even amidst challenging times.
Kim Pyeong-ho, the esteemed Artistic Director of the Daejeon City Dance Company, expressed his aspirations for the production, stating, "With its enhanced level of artistry and narrative depth, we sincerely hope that this performance will serve as a meaningful occasion for audiences to reflect on the profound significance of the March 8th Democratic Uprising and the enduring spirit of those who participated."
The performance is suitable for audience members aged 8 years and above. Tickets are priced affordably, with R seats available for 20,000 KRW, S seats for 10,000 KRW, and A seats for 5,000 KRW. Ticket reservations can be conveniently made through the official websites of the Daejeon City Dance Company and the Daejeon Arts Center, as well as through the popular ticketing platform Interpark (www.interpark.com) and its call center (1544-1555).
