Lisbon, Portugal - The future of the vital Portimão-Bragança air link remains uncertain as the operator, Sevenair, continues to await payment from the Portuguese government. The route, which also serves Cascais, Viseu, and Vila Real, was suspended in October 2024 due to outstanding debts.
During a parliamentary hearing, Sevenair CEO Carlos Amado attributed the suspension to the government's failure to fulfill its financial obligations under the concession contract. Despite temporary measures implemented by both the previous Socialist government and the current Democratic Alliance administration, persistent payment delays and bureaucratic hurdles, including a lack of approval from the Court of Auditors, have hampered the resumption of service.
Amado emphasized that the issue lies with systemic payment delays rather than any specific political party.
The regional air link plays a crucial role in connecting inland cities across Portugal, significantly reducing travel times compared to other modes of transportation. Lawmakers from across the political spectrum acknowledged the service's importance for territorial cohesion, but the hearing devolved into a blame game.
Chega MP Filipe Melo criticized the government for failing to honor its commitments, while PSD and PS representatives traded accusations regarding responsibility for the suspension.
With the new contract yet to be signed and further bureaucratic hurdles pending, a return to service for the Portimão-Bragança air link remains uncertain.
