Dangjin, South Korea - South Chungcheong Province is strategically positioning itself as a powerhouse in the burgeoning secondary battery industry by establishing a comprehensive "Battery Triangle" initiative. This ambitious plan, unveiled at an on-site economic review meeting held in Dangjin on Tuesday, aims to capitalize on the expanding demand for batteries across diverse sectors, including Urban Air Mobility (UAM), electric vehicles (EVs), and eco-friendly energy solutions.

Governor Kim Tae-heum presided over the meeting at lithium battery manufacturer Bitrocell, where he outlined the province's vision to cultivate specialized regional hubs. The "Battery Triangle" will consist of:

Seosan & Dangjin: UAM-Focused Next-Generation Battery R&D Hub. Leveraging existing industrial infrastructure like Seosan Techno Valley, the region will become a center for research and development of advanced battery technologies tailored for the emerging UAM sector. The province will invest 25 billion KRW by 2030 to establish a next-generation battery research center and lithium metal thin film manufacturing process equipment. Technology development and prototype support for UAM-specific high-energy density and lightweight batteries are also planned.
Cheonan & Asan: Electric Vehicle-Focused Intelligent Battery Industry Cluster. Capitalizing on the existing automotive industry presence, this hub will focus on intelligent battery technologies for electric vehicles. Plans include the establishment of a Fire Safety Response Battery Integrated Management System (BIMS) evaluation support center and a digital platform for intelligent battery system manufacturing and verification by 2030.
Boryeong, Hongseong & Buyeo: Eco-Friendly Battery Reuse and Resource Circulation Center. This southwestern axis will concentrate on establishing a sustainable lifecycle for batteries. A 40 billion KRW investment is earmarked for creating a full-cycle platform for eco-friendly Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) batteries and a shared platform design support center to promote the reuse and commercialization of used batteries.
Governor Kim emphasized the strategic importance of the secondary battery industry for the province's future. "Secondary batteries are South Chungcheong's future strategic industry," he stated, vowing to "establish a battery triangle hub for a new leap forward." He also pledged to actively pursue government funding and develop independent support measures, building upon existing initiatives focused on business activation, industrial base construction, and specialized complex development.

A recent report by the Chungnam Economic Promotion Agency highlighted the province's strong position in the national secondary battery landscape. As of 2023, South Chungcheong is home to 316 core and related businesses, employing 11,152 people, ranking third nationwide. The region boasts a robust ecosystem with numerous cell manufacturers, material/component/equipment suppliers, research institutions, and universities, indicating significant growth potential.

While the province's secondary battery exports reached 1.83 billion USD in 2023 (7.2% of the national total), and imports stood at 800 million USD (4.4% of the national total), the Economic Trend Analysis Center stressed the need for strategic support. The report anticipates continued growth in the sector, driven by expanding applications in EVs, energy storage systems (ESS), UAM, and drones, despite global economic uncertainties.

With this comprehensive "Battery Triangle" strategy, South Chungcheong Province aims to solidify its position as a key player in the rapidly evolving global secondary battery market, fostering economic growth and innovation across the region.
