The Chungnam Turtles ice hockey team, led by coach Lee Dong-min, has made history by winning a bronze medal at the National Winter Sports Festival. This is a significant achievement for the team, as they are based in a region with limited resources for winter sports.

The National Winter Sports Festival is a prestigious event organized by the Korea Sports Association. This year's festival was held in Gangwon Province from February 18th to 21st, featuring eight sports across various age groups. The Chungnam Turtles competed in the under-12 category and secured a commendable third place, earning them the bronze medal.

Despite facing numerous challenges, the Turtles have demonstrated their potential for growth and success. Compared to teams from major cities like Seoul and Gyeonggi, the Turtles face significant disadvantages due to their limited resources.

The Turtles train at the only ice rink in Chungnam Province, located in Asan. However, their training schedule is often disrupted by public skating sessions, forcing them to practice late into the night, sometimes as late as 9 pm. Furthermore, they can only train two to four times a week due to scheduling conflicts with players traveling from western Chungnam.

Unlike their competitors, who are mostly composed of 5th and 6th graders, the Turtles' roster includes players from 2nd to 6th grade, resulting in a smaller and less experienced team. However, their hard work and dedication have paid off, as evidenced by their remarkable achievement at the national competition.

Coach Lee Dong-min is optimistic about the future of ice hockey in Chungnam Province. The city of Cheonan is planning to build a new ice rink as part of an urban renewal project, which will not only help nurture talented players but also promote ice sports among the general public.

Coach Lee expressed his gratitude for his players' hard work and dedication, which led to their bronze medal win. He hopes that the new ice rink in Cheonan will be built soon, allowing more people to enjoy ice sports like ice hockey.
