Gyeongju, the ancient capital of Silla, is celebrated for its rich history and breathtaking nightscapes. Yet, amidst its historical grandeur, a unique culinary gem, 'Cheonnyeon-doyaji,' has emerged, offering a new kind of experience. This restaurant specializes in premium Jillye black pork from Gimcheon, served with a view of Gyeongju's famous night scenery and a touch of camping-style ambiance.

Opened in December of last year within the Gyeongju Provence complex, Cheonnyeon-doyaji is the brainchild of CEO Kim Jeong-ae (57). She envisioned a place where customers could enjoy both exceptional flavor and a memorable atmosphere. "Special taste, healthy ingredients, impeccable hygiene, and precious memories" is her mantra, a promise she strives to fulfill for every guest.

To find the best black pork, Kim personally toured the famous Jillye black pork restaurants in Gimcheon. She was particularly impressed by the Jillye breed's firm, translucent fat and its uniquely chewy texture. This prized meat forms the foundation for Cheonnyeon-doyaji's two main dishes: Spicy Seasoned Skewered Bulgogi and the ever-popular Salt-Grilled Pork. Both are first-grilled over charcoal, a process that locks in the juices and infuses the meat with a rich, smoky aroma that evokes nostalgia.

The Spicy Seasoned Skewered Bulgogi is a favorite among adults, particularly women, offering a kick of spice that might be a bit much for elementary school children. CEO Kim developed the unique seasoning herself after countless trials and tastings, perfecting a blend that harmonizes the spicy flavor with the deep, smoky scent of the charcoal-grilled pork.

However, the true star of the show is the Salt-Grilled Pork. Using prime cuts of Jillye black pork belly and neck, this dish stands out with its incredible texture. Despite being grilled, the fat remains chewy and firm, a testament to the quality of the Jillye pork. While the spicy bulgogi has its fans, the salt-grilled pork is the restaurant's top seller, especially popular with families who appreciate a milder flavor that everyone can enjoy.

To combat the waiting time for the charcoal-grilling process, Cheonnyeon-doyaji offers a delightful appetizer: Baechu-jeon (Cabbage Pancake). This savory pancake, light and not overly filling, is a beloved favorite among regulars. It's the perfect way to satisfy hungry patrons while they anticipate their main course.

For a comforting finish, guests can indulge in the Doenjang Guksu (Soybean Paste Noodles). CEO Kim went on a veritable "doenjang tour" to find the perfect ingredient, finally settling on the renowned, deeply aged doenjang from Unduryeong in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do. Its rich, savory flavor is a perfect complement to the locally-sourced noodles from Gyeongju, which are specially made to remain firm, ensuring the perfect balance of broth and noodles in every bite.

Beyond the food, Cheonnyeon-doyaji offers a special atmosphere. Located in Gyeongju Provence, the restaurant provides a stunning backdrop of beautifully lit night scenes. The interior, designed with a camping theme, adds to the unique experience, making it a hit with families and especially children, who love to dine in the indoor tents. In warmer seasons, the outdoor terrace provides an idyllic setting to enjoy both the delicious food and the enchanting Gyeongju night view.
