SEOUL— Hanbok designer Kim Dan-ha, celebrated for her work with global superstar group Blackpink, is set to captivate the fashion world once again. Her brand, Danha, will unveil a groundbreaking new collection at the 'Premium Africa Fashion Show' on September 13, blending the elegance of traditional Korean hanbok with the vibrant spirit of African textiles.
Titled "Borderless Palette," the collection represents a bold step away from convention. In an interview with Yonhap News Agency, Kim expressed her desire to challenge preconceived notions about hanbok design. "I wanted to break the stereotype that hanboks have to be made with a certain fabric or color," she stated. "I hope to impress people by showing them how creatively hanboks can be made with African fabrics."
The show, a highlight of the 8th Seoul Africa Festival, will feature 12 pieces crafted from African fabrics sourced from Nigeria and New York's bustling Harlem district. Kim's creative process was deeply personal, drawing inspiration from the art she encountered on her travels. She cited the powerful colors in the portraits of African-Americans by artist Amy Sherald, which she saw at the Whitney Museum in New York, as a major influence.
To create the unique pieces, Kim meticulously layered African fabrics over traditional Korean materials, such as the translucent silk organza. The result is a stunning fusion that honors both cultures while creating something entirely new. "We tried to preserve the original form of the hanbok while highlighting the characteristics of the African fabrics," she explained.
Kim's fascination with African textiles began years ago in Paris, where she was captivated by the beautiful patterns of Kitenge, a popular African cotton fabric. This simple observation sparked a creative journey, proving that her initial thought—that hanboks made with these textiles would be beautiful—was indeed correct. "The colors and patterns you don't typically see in Korea are incredibly attractive," she said, adding that the powerful colors of the fabrics evoke a sense of earthy energy.
Beyond her artistic vision, Kim is a strong advocate for sustainability. The Danha brand is built on a commitment to eco-friendly practices, utilizing recycled materials from plastic bottles and organic cotton to minimize the environmental impact of fashion.
As the 'Premium Africa Fashion Show' approaches, anticipation is high for the "Borderless Palette" collection. Kim's innovative approach not only celebrates cultural exchange but also solidifies her position as a visionary designer. Her ultimate goal is to transform hanbok into a global luxury brand, and with each innovative step, she moves closer to making hanbok the "Chanel of Korea."
