In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, Kim Tae-heum, the Governor of Chungcheongnam-do Province, welcomed Mizushima Koichi, the Japanese Ambassador to South Korea, to the Provincial Office on April 11th. The primary focus of the meeting centered on expanding and deepening the cooperative framework between Chungcheongnam-do and various Japanese local governments, particularly as both nations commemorate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties.
Governor Kim, in his discourse, underscored the imperative of joint efforts in addressing global challenges, fostering intergenerational exchanges, and solidifying the bedrock of mutual understanding and trust. He highlighted the strategic importance of regional diplomacy in complementing national-level relationships, emphasizing the potential for tangible benefits for the citizens of both nations.
A key aspect of the discussion revolved around the promotion of upcoming international events hosted by Chungcheongnam-do. Governor Kim extended a warm invitation to Japanese participation in the "2025-2026 Chungcheongnam-do Visit Year" and the "2026 Taean International Horticulture Healing Expo." These events, he articulated, present prime opportunities for cultural exchange and economic collaboration.
Chungcheongnam-do has a rich history of fostering enduring friendships with Japanese prefectures, notably Kumamoto, Nara, and Shizuoka, all of which share historical ties with the ancient Baekje Kingdom. The province's sister city relationship with Kumamoto Prefecture, now in its 42nd year, stands as a testament to the enduring nature of these connections. Additionally, the province has maintained fruitful cooperative relationships with Nara and Shizuoka for 14 and 12 years, respectively.
Governor Kim expressed the province's commitment to further strengthening these ties through collaborative projects with Japanese local governments and private sector entities. The aim is to create mutually beneficial initiatives that resonate with the residents of both nations, fostering economic growth and cultural understanding.
Prior to his visit to the Provincial Office, Ambassador Mizushima engaged in activities that further highlighted the multifaceted nature of the bilateral relationship. He toured the Samsung Display factory in Asan, a symbol of technological collaboration between the two countries. Later, he delivered a lecture on "Japan's Security Policy" to security course trainees at the National Defense University in Nonsan, demonstrating the importance of security cooperation in the broader context of bilateral relations.
The meeting between Governor Kim and Ambassador Mizushima underscores the ongoing efforts to strengthen the bonds between South Korea and Japan at the local government level. As both nations celebrate a significant diplomatic milestone, the focus remains on building a future marked by mutual prosperity and collaboration.
