Chungcheongnam-do Province held a commemorative ceremony for the 106th anniversary of the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea on April 11th at the main auditorium of the Chungnam Provincial Library. The event, organized by the Chungnam branch of the Korea Liberation Association, brought together approximately 250 attendees, including Governor Kim Tae-heum, Chairman Kim Wan-tae of the Korea Liberation Association's Chungnam branch, Seo Jeong-mi, head of the Seobu Veterans Affairs Office, heads of local veterans organizations, and descendants of independence activists.
The ceremony proceeded with a viewing of a video introducing the Provisional Government, a recitation of the Provisional Government's Proclamation, a commemorative performance, and a "Mansei" (Long Live Korea) three cheers performance.
A particularly poignant moment was the commemorative performance by the Maeheon Yun Bong-gil Woljinhoe poetry recitation and choir. The group honored and remembered nine independence activists from Chungnam who sacrificed themselves for Korea's independence and peace during the Japanese colonial era. Their stories were woven together into a moving theatrical poetry performance, echoing the cries for liberation.
During the ceremony, Governor Kim Tae-heum emphasized the province's commitment to inheriting the spirit of the patriotic martyrs who established the Provisional Government and to forging a bright future for the Republic of Korea.
Governor Kim stated, "Thanks to the Provisional Government, which laid the foundation for the Republic of Korea, we have been able to unleash the potential of our nation to the extent of building the world's 10th largest economy today." He expressed his deepest gratitude and respect for the noble sacrifices of the patriotic ancestors who dedicated everything to achieving national independence and establishing a democratic republic.
He further commented on the current global landscape, saying, "The world is recently witnessing frequent wars, and a hegemonic order led by the United States is emerging. At a time when we should unite to respond, we are instead heading towards extreme division, placing us in a truly precarious situation."
Governor Kim highlighted the historical significance of the Provisional Government, stating, "The Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in 1919 was a 'symbol of national unity,' bringing together scattered provisional governments across the country and establishing the legitimacy of the nation." He stressed the need for present-day unity, saying, "Now is the time to once again create a history of unity, just as the Provisional Government did 106 years ago. Facing turbulent international affairs like a raging wave, we must unite with the spirit of 'Dongjugongje' (同舟共濟 - being in the same boat and helping each other) to overcome these challenges together."
Expressing his gratitude to the Korea Liberation Association and other veterans organizations for carrying on the legacy of the patriotic martyrs, Governor Kim pledged to repay their sacrifices and dedication to the nation and its people with thorough veterans affairs support and respect.
Currently, the province provides over 30,000 veterans' families with discounts on essential goods worth 1.5 billion won and has abolished the medical expense support limit for independence merit awardees, supporting their honorable lives.
Additionally, Chungnam Province is remodeling the Chungnam Veterans Hall into a space where the proud history of patriotism can be remembered and a sense of pride can be fostered.
Governor Kim reiterated his commitment to establishing a national cemetery in Chungnam, stating, "Among the metropolitan and provincial governments, Chungnam is the only one without a national cemetery. We will actively work with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to attract a 'National Patriots Cemetery'."
The Anniversary of the Establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea (April 11th) is a national memorial day designated to commemorate the legal legitimacy and historical significance of the Provisional Government, which inherited the spirit of the March 1st Independence Movement. The event in Chungcheongnam-do served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for Korean independence and the enduring need for national unity in the face of contemporary challenges.
