A massive underground space that has remained hidden 13 meters beneath the heart of Seoul Plaza for 40 years will finally unveil itself to the world, transforming into a cultural epicenter designed to captivate global audiences. The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 24th that the 335-meter-long unused underground space—located between the upper section of the Subway Line 2 tracks and the lower section of the existing underground shopping district connecting City Hall Station and Euljiro 1-ga Station—will be fully redeveloped into a "K-Content Cultural & Experiential Platform." With an official opening slated for this October, the project is expected to become a landmark example of urban regeneration, turning an abandoned downtown space into an innovative, futuristic cultural asset.

Awakening a 40-Year-Old Space: A New Horizon for Urban Regeneration 

The underground space to be opened to the public boasts a unique tunnel-like structure, measuring 9.5 meters in width, 335 meters in length, and spanning a total area of 3,261 square meters. Believed to have been constructed in the early 1980s during the development of Seoul Subway Line 2, this "sandwich" space is uniquely situated directly below the nation's first underground shopping mall in Euljiro and right above the active subway tracks. Because it has been strictly sealed off for more than four decades without any large-scale development or commercial use, its original architectural structure—including the raw, rugged textures of the concrete walls and pillars—has been preserved in near-pristine condition.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government initially discovered and opened this space in 2023 as part of its "Fun Station" initiative, a project aimed at innovating subway station spaces, and temporarily operated a public exploration program. After witnessing overwhelming public enthusiasm and curiosity regarding this hidden underground world, the city conducted rigorous structural safety evaluations, operational feasibility studies, and assessments of private-sector participation before officially launching this comprehensive cultural platform project.

From Immersive Media Art to K-Fashion Runways: A Feast for the Senses 

The newly envisioned platform will transcend the concept of a traditional, static exhibition hall where visitors merely view artifacts. Instead, it aims to establish an interactive cultural ecosystem where domestic and international tourists can linger, experience, and engage directly.

The most striking feature of the development is how it capitalizes on the unique structural layout of the underground tunnel. The long, continuous concrete walls and robust pillars will serve as a massive raw canvas for immersive media art exhibitions. Furthermore, the expansive 335-meter tunnel structure will serve as a strategic outpost for globalizing K-Fashion. The city plans to regularly host avant-garde K-fashion exhibitions, spectacular runway shows, and global brand showcases here. Additionally, the venue will feature permanent pop-up stores showcasing official K-pop artist merchandise, diverse multimedia content screenings, and immersive experiences dedicated to the rapidly growing universes of virtual idols, cementing its status as a must-visit pilgrimage site for K-culture enthusiasts worldwide.

Merging Cutting-Edge ICT with Uncompromising Safety Measures 

The specialized operation and content curation of this platform will be managed by "Creative Mut," a leading agency specializing in immersive content planning and production. The company plans to deploy an array of cutting-edge Information and Communications Technology (ICT), including hologram displays, artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and Unreal Engine-based computer graphics (CG) commonly utilized in filmmaking and gaming. This synergy will blend the analog aesthetics of the historical underground space with state-of-the-art digital experiences.

However, given its location directly above bustling downtown subway tracks, ensuring public safety and robust infrastructure remains the top priority. The Seoul Metropolitan Government is working in close coordination with the Seoul Metro to overcome structural limitations and the inherent constraints of an enclosed underground environment. To guarantee a secure environment, the city will install high-performance ventilation systems, advanced firefighting and disaster-prevention equipment, and highly visible emergency evacuation guidance systems. Infrastructure fortification will be completed first, followed sequentially by private-sector interior installations to ensure maximum safety. Accessibility is also highly convenient, with direct public entry available via the existing entrances of Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2.

"The unused underground space, which proved its boundless potential during its brief initial unveiling three years ago, has finally entered the execution phase to be reborn as a futuristic, high-tech cultural space for citizens and global tourists alike," said Kim Yong-hak, Director General of the Future Space Planning Bureau at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, highlighting the project's significance. "Beginning with this Seoul Plaza underground space, we are methodically preparing tailored 'Fun Station' projects at other major transit hubs, including Gangdong Station and Gasan Digital Complex Station, customized to match each region's distinct characteristics and spatial charm. We will continuously transform subway stations from mere transit corridors into innovative, multi-purpose spaces that inject new vitality and inspiration into citizens' daily lives."
