Japan and Paraguay are poised to elevate their bilateral relationship to a "strategic partnership" and establish a framework for regular policy consultations. The Yomiuri Shimbun reports that Japanese Prime Minister Shigeki Ishiba and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña are expected to reach this agreement during their upcoming summit.

This elevation of ties aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in maintaining and developing a free and open international order, in response to China's growing influence in the Latin American region.

President Peña is scheduled to visit Japan from Monday to Friday to attend Paraguay's National Day events at the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

Paraguay has consistently upheld fundamental values and has demonstrated its role as a responsible member of the international community by criticizing Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
