Singapore – The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has issued an urgent alert urging ship operators to maintain the highest level of vigilance in anticipation of a forecasted Northeast Monsoon surge from March 19 to 21, next year.

This alert is seen as a proactive measure to prioritize ship safety in response to significant weather changes expected in Singaporean waters. The MPA predicts moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds during this period, warning of an increased risk of maritime accidents.

Key Safety Measures Emphasized:

Strengthened Ship Moorings: The MPA urges all vessels to ensure thorough preparation for secure mooring at sea. This measure is intended to prevent ships from breaking free and drifting due to strong winds.
Inspection of Life-Saving and Firefighting Equipment: The MPA emphasizes the need to thoroughly inspect and maintain the operational status of all life-saving and firefighting equipment onboard vessels, in accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations.
Enhanced Crew Emergency Response Capabilities: The MPA calls for the strengthening of crew emergency response capabilities in preparation for potential accidents during passenger embarkation and disembarkation in adverse weather conditions. It particularly emphasizes that all crew members should be familiar with emergency procedures.
Maintenance of Safe Speed and Compliance with International Regulations: Vessels must maintain a safe speed and strictly comply with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs).
An MPA official stated, “This alert aims to prompt ship operators to prioritize safety in anticipation of the adverse weather expected next March. All ship operators must be aware of the alert’s content and take thorough safety measures.”
