Cheongyang, South Korea – Yoo Nam-kyu, a gold medalist in table tennis at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and currently the Vice President of the Korea Table Tennis Association, visited Jeongsan High School in Cheongyang, South Chungcheong Province, on April 18th to encourage the school's dedicated table tennis team.

He was accompanied by Kim Don-gon, the Mayor of Cheongyang County, and other local dignitaries. Together, they observed the young athletes diligently honing their skills, toured the training facilities, and attentively inquired about any difficulties the players might be facing. This visit underscores the growing support and investment in fostering table tennis talent within the region.

Recent developments have significantly bolstered the infrastructure for table tennis in Cheongyang. On April 13th, the "Dasom Hall," a dormitory exclusively designed for the table tennis team with a focus on the students' comfort and training concentration, was completed. Furthermore, the Cheongyang County's "Jeongsan Elementary, Middle, and High School Table Tennis Team National Athlete Dream Cultivation Project," a part of the hometown donation system, exceeded its initial fundraising goal, reaching a total of 48.01 million KRW. These advancements provide an enhanced environment for the young athletes to pursue their dreams.

During his visit, Yoo Nam-kyu emphasized the importance of not only skill but also perseverance and fighting spirit for athletes to achieve consistent success in every match. He stressed the values of continuous self-improvement ("jeolcha takma") and maintaining composure with the heart of a lion during competitions. Oh Geon-su, the Principal of Jeongsan High School, expressed his pride in the recent achievements of the table tennis team in various competitions. Bae Jong-nam, the Superintendent of Education, remarked on the significance of having a star of Korean table tennis visit Jeongsan High School, instilling dreams in the young athletes. He affirmed his commitment to providing unwavering support so that the table tennis players of Cheongyang can mature into successors of Yoo Nam-kyu.

The table tennis program at the elementary, middle, and high schools in Jeongsan, Cheongyang, has demonstrated remarkable success. In the Chungnam Sports Festival held in early April, which served as the preliminary competition to select representatives for the National Youth Sports Festival, approximately 30 students participated, and an impressive 13 students were chosen to represent South Chungcheong Province at the national event. This achievement highlights the burgeoning talent and the effectiveness of the training programs in the region.
