SEOCHEON, South Korea – The Chungnam Provincial Council has initiated a research group dedicated to re-evaluating the historical significance of Maryang Port in Seocheon-gun, recognized as the first point of entry for the Bible into Korea. The move aims to develop local festivals and bolster tourism in the region.

The 'Research Group for the Great Festival of Maryang Port, the First Site of Bible Introduction in Korea' held its official launch on March 28th at the Seocheon County Office. Spearheaded by Provincial Councilor Jeon Ik-hyeon (representing Seocheon 1), the 17-member group comprises various stakeholders committed to highlighting the port's unique historical value.

Key objectives of the research group include raising public awareness of Maryang Port's pivotal role in Korean modern history, conceptualizing and developing large-scale local festivals, and forging connections with the broader tourism sector in Seocheon to stimulate economic growth.

At the launch event, Professor Kim Ju-ho from Pai Chai University's Department of Tourism Management delivered a presentation setting the stage for the group's work. This was followed by an open discussion among the members, focusing on strategies for the successful implementation of their goals.

Councilor Jeon Ik-hyeon expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, "Despite its profound importance in Korea's modern history, Maryang Port's significance has not been widely recognized. This research group will work diligently to bring its historical value to the forefront and develop a major local festival that will not only celebrate its heritage but also inject vitality into the local economy."

The establishment of this research group signals a concerted effort by the Chungnam Provincial Council to leverage the historical and cultural assets of the region to enhance tourism and economic prosperity.
