Montevideo, Uruguay – On December 6th, Uruguay marked Psychology Day with a special ceremony honoring the contributions of psychologists to the country. The event, organized by the Coordinadora de Psicólogos del Uruguay (CPU), took place at the newly designated Psychology Plaza in Montevideo, located at the intersection of Avenida Agraciada, Capitán Manuel Antonio Artigas, and Uruguayana.
The ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering, including Montevideo Mayor Mauricio Zunino, Junta Departamental President Claudio Visillac, and numerous psychologists, faculty members from the University of the Republic's Faculty of Psychology, and members of the public.
Highlighting the Importance of Psychology
In their addresses, city officials emphasized the pivotal role of psychology in Uruguayan society, acknowledging the profession’s impact on various aspects of life. The CPU's Secretary General, Carolina Moll, delivered a poignant speech that celebrated the achievements of psychologists and underscored the profession’s commitment to social justice.
Moll paid tribute to influential figures in Uruguayan psychology, both past and present, and highlighted the collective efforts of psychologists to improve mental health care. She emphasized the importance of psychologists working collaboratively with other professionals and community members to address the complex challenges facing society.
A Call for Continued Advocacy
Moll also used the occasion to call for greater recognition of psychology's role in shaping public policy. She urged psychologists to continue advocating for increased access to mental health services and to work towards creating a more just and equitable society.
"We have embraced a beautiful and committed profession," Moll said, "one that has a strong social commitment and that leads us to be alongside people who need us."
The Psychology Plaza
The choice of the Psychology Plaza as the venue for the ceremony was symbolic of the growing recognition of psychology in Uruguay. The plaza, located in a central part of the city, is a dedicated space for reflection and community engagement.
Conclusion
Uruguay’s Psychology Day celebration was a testament to the significant contributions of psychologists to the country. As the profession continues to evolve, psychologists in Uruguay are committed to promoting mental health and well-being for all.
