The 2025 National Lifesports Festival, which commenced on the 24th, is currently unfolding with great enthusiasm across the Jeollanam-do province. On the 25th, the Mokpo Gymnasium became the epicenter of fervent competition as the table tennis events took center stage. From the early hours of the morning, the venue was brimming with spectators, palpably experiencing the vibrant energy of grassroots sports. Representing their respective regions, athletes engaged in intense rallies across the net, their dedication and skill on full display.
The rhythmic thud of table tennis balls, punctuated by forceful smashes accompanied by guttural exclamations of effort, and the resounding cheers of fervent supporters, coalesced into an atmosphere that rivaled the intensity of the Olympic Games. The fervor escalated further with the arrival of Olympic table tennis legend and current President of the Korea Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC), Ryu Seung-min. His presence ignited a fresh wave of excitement as he traversed the gymnasium, personally greeting and encouraging the amateur athletes, thereby amplifying the already electrifying ambiance.
Amidst the flurry of competitive action, one individual particularly captured the spotlight: Gwak Eo-jin, a 69-year-old athlete representing Jeollanam-do in the women's division. With a remarkable 25-year dedication to the sport, Gwak achieved a noteworthy bronze medal on her home turf, earning significant recognition for her accomplishment and perseverance.
In an interview with SPOTV News, an elated Gwak shared her sentiments, stating, "As the competition was held in Jeollanam-do, I prepared with even greater tension. Honestly, I considered even third place to be as elusive as a star in the sky, so achieving a podium finish representing Jeollanam-do fills me with immense joy."
Reflecting on her quarter-century journey with table tennis, Gwak emphasized the profound positive impact the sport has had on her overall well-being. "Since I started playing table tennis, both my physical and mental health have improved remarkably," she affirmed. Her passion for the sport extends beyond personal enjoyment; having acquired a table tennis lifesports coaching certification, she actively mentors numerous enthusiasts within her local community.
Gwak's affection for table tennis is so profound that she metaphorically described it as an "addiction." She elaborated, "Apart from eating and sleeping, I spend almost every day playing table tennis. It's constantly on my mind, whether I'm awake or dreaming. Moreover, even at my age, I derive a small income from coaching others, which gives it a significance beyond just a hobby. For me, table tennis is both health and art. I hope to continue enjoying it for many more years to come," she added with a cheerful smile.
Throughout the interview, Gwak's unwavering belief in the societal value of lifesports and table tennis was evident. She passionately advocated for the integration of physical activity into daily life, stating, "Even if it's not table tennis, I urge everyone to participate in some form of lifesports! It's essential for both physical and mental well-being. Engaging in exercise is the first step in preventing geriatric depression and safeguarding one's health."
The fervent table tennis competition at the Mokpo Gymnasium served as a powerful testament to the true value of sports, transcending generational divides and regional boundaries. It underscored the pivotal role of lifesports not only as a means of physical activity but also as a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle and a vital catalyst for community connection. The enthusiastic participation and the inspiring story of Gwak Eo-jin highlighted the enduring appeal and the significant positive impact of grassroots sports on individuals and society as a whole. The National Lifesports Festival continues to celebrate these values, fostering a nationwide spirit of healthy competition and community engagement.
