Itaipu Dam's Power Generation Surges, Brazil's Energy Intake Rises by 33%

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay - The Itaipu Binational Hydroelectric Power Plant demonstrated a robust performance in the first quarter of this year, with its electricity generation increasing by 5% compared to the same period in 2024. According to data released by Itaipu Binacional (IB), the total power generated reached 20,056 GWh between January and March 2025, up from 19,080 GWh in the first quarter of the previous year.

Despite this overall increase in production, Paraguay experienced a 6% decrease in its energy supply from the plant, receiving 6,382 GWh in the first three months of 2025, down from 6,798 GWh in the corresponding period of 2024.

This shift resulted in a notable 11% surge in the energy supplied to Brazil. Notably, the transfer of energy to Brazil witnessed a significant 33% increase. Brazil's energy consumption from Itaipu climbed from 12,282 GWh in the first quarter of 2024 to 13,674 GWh in the same timeframe this year. The energy transferred to Brazil also saw a substantial rise, increasing from 2,742 GWh in the first three months of 2024 to 3,646 GWh in the equivalent period of 2025.

In March alone, the total power generation reached 6,257 GWh. Of this, 3,325 GWh were produced through the 50Hz system, with 2,129 GWh supplied to Paraguay's National Electricity Administration (ANDE). ANDE reported a 5.6% increase in the electricity demand of Paraguay's national power system during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year.

The Itaipu Binacional report also highlighted the high operational efficiency of its generating units. "The availability of the generating units in March reached 96.20%, exceeding the company's target of 94% by 2.20%," the report stated.

Itaipu Binacional attributed these achievements to "efficient operation and maintenance practices, the technical expertise of its workforce, and the close collaboration between the Paraguayan and Brazilian electrical systems" in an official statement.
