The disqualification incident involving national judo athlete Jung Su-jin at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games has been filed with the Sports Ethics Center. Coach Jung Sung-sook and the coaching staff of the women's national team, who guided Jung at the time, are expected to be investigated regarding whether they neglected their duties in athlete management.
According to the sports community on the 6th, a matter regarding whether Coach Jung and the coaching staff neglected their athlete management duties has been filed with the Sports Ethics Center.
Jung Su-jin was scheduled to compete in the women's 48kg judo event at the Aichi International Arena in Nagoya, Japan, on the 30th of last month. However, she was disqualified after failing to pass a random additional weigh-in held on the day of the match.
The permitted weight for the 48kg class additional weigh-in was 50.4kg, but Jung Su-jin exceeded it by 100g. While Jung passed the official weigh-in the day before the match, she failed the additional weigh-in on the day of the competition, leaving the venue with her head down without even being able to play her match.
Initially, the disqualification was known to be due to Jung's failure in weight management, but the controversy grew larger when Jung revealed the situation at the time through her social networking service (SNS) on the 4th.
Jung claimed that on the morning of the match, after checking the weigh-in draw results, she was informed by the coach and coaching staff that she was not subject to the weigh-in, and she ate a meal believing this. However, Jung explained that she belatedly learned she was subject to the weigh-in only about 15 minutes before the weigh-in closed.
Following this, Jung vomited everything she had eaten, cut her hair, and kept running, trying until the very last moment to make weight, but ultimately exceeded the allowed weight by 100g and was disqualified.
The controversy escalated further as Jung claimed that following her disqualification, Coach Jung told her, "It can end quietly only if this is wrapped up as it is."
In response, the Korea Judo Association stated, "We will verify the situation at the time with Jung Su-jin and the related coaches, and take necessary measures in accordance with relevant regulations and procedures based on the investigation results."
The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee's Athletes' Commission also asserted on the same day, "Before holding the athlete accountable, we must first verify whether the information delivery and athlete management by the coaches and the association were properly carried out."
