Uruguayan national team striker Luis Suárez (38, Inter Miami) has been suspended for six matches for spitting at an opposing team's staff member.

According to foreign media on the 6th (Korea time), Suárez was banned for six matches by the Leagues Cup organizing committee for allegedly spitting at an opposing team's staff member during the Leagues Cup final against Seattle Sounders on the 1st.

In the final, held at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington, Inter Miami suffered a 0-3 defeat to Seattle. Immediately after the match, players from both teams physically clashed. Suárez grabbed a Seattle player by the neck and threatened him, then got into a verbal altercation with the opposing team's security chief and spat in his face.

As the controversy grew, Suárez took to social media, stating, "It was a moment of immense tension and frustration, but something that should never have happened, happened. My reaction cannot be justified." He added, "I was wrong and I sincerely regret it."

In addition to Suárez, Inter Miami's Sergio Busquets (2 matches) and Tomás Avilés (3 matches), who punched an opposing player and participated in the violent act, respectively, were also suspended. Seattle coach Steven Lenhart was suspended for five matches.

The suspensions apply to the Leagues Cup, a tournament between American and Mexican soccer leagues. As this year's tournament has already ended, the suspensions will apply to next season. However, Suárez and Busquets' contracts with Inter Miami are set to expire after this season, so they may not be affected. The organizing committee did state, "All individuals who have been sanctioned under the tournament rules will be fined," and "MLS may take additional action against the players and coaches involved," so there is a possibility of further disciplinary action from MLS.

Suárez is a Uruguayan national team player who has played for Liverpool (England), FC Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid (Spain). In 2011, while with Liverpool, he was suspended for eight matches for alleged racial abuse of then-Manchester United fullback Patrice Evra. He has also been suspended a total of three times for bizarrely biting opposing players while with Ajax (Netherlands), Liverpool, and the Uruguayan national team.
