KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia's national football team is gearing up for the crucial Asian Cup qualifiers with a squad that blends experienced veterans, diverse backgrounds, and remarkable comeback stories. The most notable inclusion is the return of veteran midfielder Natxo Insa, whose La Liga pedigree adds a layer of seasoned expertise to the team.
Insa, 38, born Ignacio "Natxo" Insa Bohigues in Cocentaina, Spain, has a distinguished career that spans top-tier Spanish football. He emerged from Valencia's youth academy, showcasing his talent in La Liga with stints at Valencia, Villarreal, and Celta Vigo. His extensive experience in the Segunda Division, where he amassed 244 appearances, underscores his consistency and resilience.
His journey took a unique turn when he joined Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in 2017. Leveraging his Malaysian heritage through his grandmother, Insa earned his national team debut in March 2018. However, his international career faced a hiatus until his recall in June 2023 under coach Kim Pan-gon. Despite this, a disappointing performance against Bahrain drew criticism, casting doubt on his future with the national team.
Now, under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Peter Cklamovski, Insa has been given another chance. Cklamovski's decision highlights a strategic approach to blend experience with emerging talent. "Natxo brings a wealth of experience and a tactical understanding that will be invaluable in these qualifiers," Cklamovski stated in a recent press conference.
The Malaysian squad reflects a growing trend of diversity in international football. Alongside Insa, the team features eight mixed-heritage players, including Matthew Davies (Australia) and La'Vere Corbin-Ong (Barbados), and four naturalized players, showcasing Malaysia's evolving football identity.
A particularly inspiring story is the return of forward Faisal Halim. After suffering severe injuries in an acid attack in May 2024, Faisal's determination has been nothing short of extraordinary. Following multiple surgeries and an extended hospital stay, he has returned to the pitch, delivering a spectacular hat-trick on March 8, signaling his readiness for international duty. "Faisal's resilience is a testament to his character. He's an inspiration to the entire team," Cklamovski remarked.
Johor Darul Ta'zim’s dominance in Malaysian football is evident, with nine players from the recently crowned 11-time consecutive league champions included in the squad. This strong JDT presence underscores the club's pivotal role in shaping the national team's performance.
Cklamovski has also indicated that the squad may see further additions, with three players nearing the completion of their naturalization processes, potentially joining the team for the June call-up.
Malaysia's preparation for the Asian Cup qualifiers will be intense, with no friendly matches scheduled before their opening match against Nepal on March 25 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. The team's campaign will be defined by their rivalry with Vietnam, with crucial matches set for June 10, 2025, in Malaysia and March 31, 2026, in Vietnam.
As Malaysia embarks on this crucial qualification journey, the blend of veteran experience, diverse backgrounds, and inspiring comeback stories creates a compelling narrative. The nation's football fans will be watching closely, hoping for a successful campaign that secures their place in the Asian Cup.
