Seoul, South Korea – Jung Bora, a renowned South Korean author, has made history by becoming the first Korean writer to be nominated for the prestigious Philip K. Dick Award. Her short story collection, Your Utopia, was announced as one of six finalists for the award, a significant milestone in the world of science fiction literature.
Published by Rabbit Hole, the English translation of Your Utopia was released last year. The collection, originally published in Korean as part of the anthology Meeting Her, comprises eight thought-provoking stories. The title story, Your Utopia, paints a bleak picture of a post-apocalyptic world where a self-driving car roams a desolate planet, carrying a malfunctioning humanoid.
The Philip K. Dick Award, named after the influential science fiction writer, is considered one of the "Big Three" awards in the genre, alongside the Hugo and Nebula Awards. This year's winner will be announced on April 18th.
Jung Bora has previously garnered international acclaim for her work, including being shortlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize and the 2023 National Book Award for Translated Literature for her collection Cursed Bunny. She has also won the Leipzig Book Fair Prize.
The author's other notable works include The King of Women and On Suffering.
This nomination marks a significant achievement for Korean literature, highlighting the growing global recognition of South Korean authors and their unique contributions to the world of science fiction.
