Tokyo, Japan – In a momentous celebration of the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan, the Korean Cultural Center in Tokyo hosted a spectacular evening of traditional music on March 5th. Acclaimed artists from both nations graced the stage, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and long-standing exchange between the two countries.

The event featured an impressive lineup of performers:

From Korea: Daegeum (bamboo flute) player Lim Jung-hyun, Gayageum (zither) player Kim So-jung, Pansori (epic narrative song) master Jo Ju-seon, and percussionist Lee Min-hyung.
From Japan: Shamisen (three-stringed lute) players Honjo Hidetaro, Honjo Hidejiro, and Honjo Hideeiji.

The program offered a diverse musical experience, featuring:

Korean traditional music such as Daegeum Jeongak "Cheongseonggok" and Pansori "Simcheongga."
Japanese Shamisen solo performances.
A collaborative piece, "Light Thread," composed by Honjo Hidetaro with lyrics by Oh Hyun-hee, blending the delicate melodies of the Shamisen with the distinctive Korean vocal style.
A harmonious fusion of Gayageum Sanjo, Shamisen, Daegeum, and Haegeum (two-stringed fiddle), showcasing the seamless integration of both countries' musical traditions.

Gong Hyung-sik, Director of the Korean Cultural Center, expressed his delight in hosting the event, emphasizing the importance of expanding cultural exchange beyond popular culture to include traditional arts. He called for increased collaboration and institutional support to facilitate artistic exchange between the two nations.

Despite inclement weather, the event drew a large audience who were captivated by the harmonious blend of Korean and Japanese musical instruments.
