GIMHAE, South Korea – A pastor in his 60s, who was convicted of serially raping 10 women in the Gimhae area in the early 2000s, has been ordered to wear an electronic tracking device (ankle bracelet) upon his release from prison.

The Changwon District Court ordered the pastor, identified only as A, to wear the bracelet for 10 years. A is currently serving a 22-year sentence for multiple counts of rape and other related charges.

Between 2001 and 2003, A broke into the homes of women living alone and sexually assaulted 10 of them, in some cases stealing valuables or attempting further assaults. He was initially sentenced to life in prison, but his sentence was reduced to 22 years after the Supreme Court overturned some of the charges.

While A's crimes predate the implementation of the electronic monitoring law in 2008, the court granted the prosecution's request to attach a bracelet due to concerns about potential recidivism. The decision comes after the National Assembly amended the law in 2010 to allow for retroactive application of electronic monitoring to high-risk sex offenders.

A is scheduled to be released from prison this October.
